01
Best overall pick
Santa Monica State Beach
Santa Monica Shoreline • Classic Family-Friendly Pier Beach • Best All-Around Choice
A big, lively beach with plenty of sand, a famous pier, and lots to do once you dry off.
If you’re heading west from Altadena and only pick one beach, Santa Monica is the safest bet. Wide sand, bike paths, and the pier’s rides and food make it easy to keep a group entertained all day. It can be busy and parking isn’t cheap, but the mix of ocean, amenities, and people-watching is hard to beat.
02
Best classic Malibu stretch
Zuma Beach
Malibu Coast • Wide-Open Seaside Escape • Best For A Full Beach Day
A long, clean Malibu beach with room to spread out and a more laid-back feel than the city beaches.
Zuma is a great call when you want the drive to feel like part of the day trip. Past Santa Monica and Malibu’s canyon turnoffs, you’ll reach a huge sweep of sand with plenty of space, decent facilities, and reliable surf. From Altadena it’s a bit farther than other picks, but you’re rewarded with cooler air, fewer crowds, and those classic Malibu views.
03
Best for a polished beach-town feel
Manhattan Beach
South Bay • Upscale Yet Relaxed Beach Town • Great For Strolling And Dining
An attractive South Bay beach with a photogenic pier, walkable streets, and a strong local vibe.
Manhattan Beach pairs its broad sandy shoreline with a compact, charming downtown that’s ideal for a post-swim coffee or dinner. The Strand path runs along the water, making it easy to walk or bike and peek at oceanfront houses. From Altadena, it’s a straightforward freeway run, and feels like a reward after escaping the inland heat.
04
Best for evening hangouts
Dockweiler State Beach
Playa Del Rey / Lax Adjacent • Casual, Social Beach With Fire Pits • Best For Bonfires And Sunsets
A long, flat beach famous for its fire rings, easy access, and planes cruising overhead.
Dockweiler is a practical choice when you want a low-key beach day or an evening bonfire without trekking deep into Malibu. The sand is wide, the parking lots are big, and the mood is more local than touristy. Expect airplane noise from nearby LAX, but if you’re coming from Altadena for a sunset hangout, the convenience and fire pits often win out over the soundtrack.
05
Best for people-watching
Venice Beach
Venice Boardwalk District • Bohemian, High-Energy Beachfront • Great For Street Life And Skating
An iconic stretch of sand backed by a nonstop boardwalk scene of vendors, performers, and skaters.
Venice is the pick when the beach is only half the reason you came. The boardwalk delivers street art, eccentric shops, and the famous skate park, while the sand and waves are just steps away. From Altadena, plan your drive to avoid peak traffic and then take your time wandering between the water, Muscle Beach, and the side streets nearby.
