01
Best overall pick
Seacliff State Beach
Seacliff Neighborhood Shoreline • Classic State Park Beach With A Long Promenade • Top Choice For A First Aptos Beach Day
Iconic pier views, easy access, and a long, flat stretch of sand make Seacliff the most versatile starting point for exploring the Aptos coast.
This is the beach most people picture when they think of Aptos: broad sand, gentle waves, and the old concrete ship anchoring the horizon. Parking sits right along the water, so it’s easy to haul coolers and chairs, and the paved beachfront path makes it friendly for strollers and slower walkers. On busier weekends, head a little north or south along the sand and you can usually still find space to spread out.
02
Best neighborhood vibe
Rio Del Mar Beach
Rio Del Mar Seaside Neighborhood • Relaxed Residential Strand With Room To Roam • Go-To For Long Walks And Casual Hangouts
A wide, walkable shoreline backed by homes and a small esplanade gives Rio Del Mar a laid-back, lived-in feel that regulars love.
Rio Del Mar tends to feel a bit quieter than Seacliff, especially as you walk south away from the main entrance. It’s the kind of place locals bring coffee in the morning, amble for miles, and let kids dig in the sand while pelicans cruise by. If the main lot is busy, street parking up the hill often works with a few extra stair steps.
03
Best for sunset picnics
Seascape Park Beach
Seascape Blufftop District • Bluff-Backed Pocket Beach Below A Small Park • Ideal For Mellow Afternoons And Sunset Picnics
Tucked below a grassy park with big views, Seascape Park Beach feels more tucked-away than the main Aptos strands without being hard to reach.
Up top, you get a compact neighborhood park with benches, lawns, and sweeping views north toward Seacliff and south toward Manresa. A path and stairs drop you down to the sand, where it’s usually easy to find a quieter corner, especially on weekdays. Bring layers: the bluff can be breezy, but that same exposure makes for striking sunset color when the fog cooperates.
04
Best for space to yourself
Manresa State Beach
South Of Aptos Toward Watsonville • Wide Open State Beach Framed By High Bluffs • Best For An Uncrowded, Surfy Feel
With fewer houses and more dunes and bluffs, Manresa feels wilder and more spacious than the in-town Aptos beaches.
Manresa is where you go when you want big-sky views and plenty of sand between you and the next group. Surfers favor the shifting sandbars here, and the long shoreline is great for ambitious walks that can easily turn into a workout. There are stairs down from the parking area, so pack light, but the tradeoff is a broader horizon and fewer day-trippers.
05
Best for dog walkers
Dolphin Beach (Beer Can Beach)
Between Seacliff And La Selva Beach • Dog-Friendly Locals’ Beach Below Coastal Bluffs • Perfect For Dog Walks And Low-Tide Exploring
Popular with locals and their dogs, this long, gently sloping beach feels casual and neighborly, especially on cool mornings and foggy evenings.
Accessed by a blufftop parking area and a short path down, Dolphin Beach connects along the sand with both Seacliff and Seascape when the tides play along. You’ll see plenty of regulars getting in their daily dog walk or jog, and the vibe stays easygoing even when other nearby beaches feel busy. It’s light on amenities, so think of it as a bring-your-own-coffee and enjoy-the-view kind of spot.
