It is an excellent choice when the foothills are baking and you want a full picnic-and-hiking day around the lake rather than just a quick swim.

Head west through Angels Camp and you hit New Melones, where the swim beach at the Glory Hole Recreation Area feels more like a traditional reservoir beach. The shoreline here is roomy, with gradual lake access that works well for floating, swimming, and launching small inflatables. Expect hot, exposed conditions in midsummer, so plan on shade, plenty of water, and possibly combining your swim with a boat rental or fishing session.

Pinecrest Lake is a bit of a drive from Avery, but its well-developed day use beach repays the time if you want a full-service outing. The sandy shoreline shelves gradually into the lake, and nearby you will find snack stands, restrooms, and boat rentals that keep logistics simple. It can be busy on peak summer weekends, so aim for earlier in the day or shoulder season for a more relaxed feel.

The North Shore day use area features a sizeable beach where you can spread out, set up a canopy, and spend the day in and out of the water. It is a smart choice when the high country is still thawing out or already cooling down but you are not ready to retire the beach bag.
