01
Closest waterfront escape
Bay Point Regional Shoreline
Bay Point Waterfront • Quiet Shoreline Preserve • Best For Relaxed Strolls
A flat, windswept shoreline with fishing piers, levee trails, and wide views across Suisun Bay.
This is more of a marsh-edge waterfront than a towel-and-umbrella beach, but it's the easiest place in town to be right beside the water. Walk the loop trail along the levee, watch trains and ships slide by, and bring binoculars for shorebirds and the occasional seal. Go at golden hour for some of the best sunsets in east Contra Costa.
02
Best family beach day
Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach
Alameda Shoreline • Classic Bayfront Swimming Beach • Best For Families
A broad, gently sloping sandy beach with usually calm bay water, seasonal lifeguards, and grassy picnic areas just behind the sand.
Crown Beach is the go-to spot when you want a real sand-and-swim day without driving all the way to the ocean. The water is shallow and relatively warm by Bay standards, and there are restrooms, a paved path, and big lawns for spreading out. On hot weekends, arrive early as parking and picnic tables fill fast.
03
Best quick bay escape
Keller Beach
Point Richmond • Pocket Cove With Golden Gate Views • Great For Spontaneous Outings
A small, sheltered strip of sand tucked below the bluffs, with soft waves and sightlines toward the bridges on clear days.
Hidden just off the road in Miller/Knox Regional Shoreline, Keller Beach feels surprisingly tucked away for how close it is to the freeway. A short path and staircase drop you down to the sand, where locals come for quick dips, dog walks, and sunsets. Parking is limited, the water stays chilly, and fog can roll in, but it's a lovely low-commitment escape from inland heat.
04
Best for surf and scenery
Rodeo Beach
Marin Headlands • Windy, Dramatic Surf Beach • Best For Wave-Watching And Hiking
A pebbly, dark-sand shore backed by rugged hills, with consistent surf and trailheads rising straight from the parking lot.
Rodeo Beach is all about energy: crashing waves, steep headlands, and the constant pull of the Pacific. It's not a gentle swimming spot, but it's fantastic for walking the shoreline, watching surfers, and exploring the lagoon behind the beach. Bring layers, then link your visit with nearby bunkers and coastal trails for big views over the Golden Gate.
05
Classic ocean day trip
Stinson Beach
Marin Coast North Of Sf • Wide, Laid-Back Oceanfront • Best Full-Day Outing
A long, bright stretch of sand with room to spread out, small town amenities steps away, and some of the most reliable sun on the central Marin coast.
If you're leaving Bay Point for a full ocean fix, Stinson is worth the winding drive over Mount Tam. There's proper surf, seasonal lifeguards, picnic tables, and a handful of cafes and markets right across from the sand. Fog is always a possibility and parking can fill by late morning on hot days, so plan to arrive early and make an afternoon of it.
