Best overall alpine beach
Lake Sabrina
Upper Bishop Creek Canyon • Scenic Alpine Lake Beach • Best For First-Time Visitors
A dramatic blue-green lake backed by jagged peaks, with small coves and rocky pull-offs that feel made for spreading out a towel.
Drive the winding road above Bishop and Lake Sabrina suddenly appears, ringed by granite and pines, with easy lakeside access right off the pavement. The water is cold but inviting on a hot summer afternoon, and you can pair a quick dip with a boat rental or an ice cream from the tiny marina store. Go early or late in the day for softer light and a better chance at finding a quieter corner along the shore.
02
Quiet high-elevation escape
South Lake
South Fork Bishop Creek • Laid-Back Mountain Shoreline • Great For Picnics And Paddling
A high-elevation reservoir with scattered pocket beaches and calm coves that feel miles away from the bustle of town.
South Lake sits at the very end of the road, with the kind of lofty, big-Sierra views that make a picnic taste better. Short paths from the parking areas lead down to flat rocks and small gravelly patches by the water where you can lounge, launch a kayak, or watch anglers work the inlets. Afternoons can get breezy, so many locals aim for a late-morning swim before the wind picks up.
03
Photographer’s hidden nook
North Lake
North Fork Bishop Creek • Intimate Lakeside Nook • Best For Fall Color And Photography
A small, quiet lake with a narrow shoreline and big aspen reflections, ideal for a contemplative sit more than an all-day beach scene.
Reaching North Lake involves a short but steep side road that leaves most casual drivers headed elsewhere, which keeps things calmer at the water’s edge. The shoreline here is a mix of soft soil, grasses, and little clearings where you can perch close enough to dip your feet while watching the clouds roll over the crest. In late September and early October, the surrounding aspens turn brilliant gold, making this one of the prettiest spots anywhere near Bishop for a lakeside stroll.

Wind and water playground
Crowley Lake
Along Us-395 North Of Bishop • Wide-Open Reservoir Beach • Best For Wind Sports And Boating
A big, breezy reservoir with broad, open shorelines where powerboats, paddlers, and beach chairs all find room to spread out.
Crowley Lake is the place locals point you when you ask about a classic big-water day, with boat launches, long views, and plenty of sky. The shoreline near the marinas offers easy walk-up access to the water, and on warm weekends you’ll see everything from paddleboards to fishing rigs working the coves. Expect more chop and wind than the tighter canyon lakes, but also more space to play and a summery, social feel.

Most family-friendly shore
June Lake Beach
June Lake Loop North Of Bishop • Classic Sandy Lake Beach • Best For Families And Casual Swims
A true sandy beach on a clear mountain lake, shallow enough near the shore for kids to splash while adults take in the cirque of peaks.
About an hour north of Bishop, June Lake Beach feels like someone dropped a small beach town scene into an alpine bowl. The designated swim area has soft sand, gentle entry, and usually a flotilla of inflatables drifting just offshore, with restrooms and parking close by. Pack a cooler and plan to linger; you can swim, rent a kayak in town, then loop the lake drive for more views when the sun starts to dip.
