It does get busy on summer weekends, but the shoreline is long enough that you can usually walk a bit north or south to find more space.

Straight-shot access from inland neighborhoods to a broad, drive-on beach that feels more local and low-key than the pier.
Head straight down Grand Avenue and you end up right on the sand, with the option to drive onto the beach when conditions and regulations allow. It is a favorite spot for evening fire pits, long walks along the hard-packed shoreline, and flying kites in the afternoon wind. Expect fewer tourists than Pismo, but be ready for onshore breeze and bring layers once the sun dips.

It is the place to go if you want long, quiet walks away from town or to watch riders cresting the sand hills from a distance. Check current access rules and closures before you go, and pick a non-motorized section if you prefer a calmer, kid-friendly vibe.

Tucked into a south-facing cove, Avila often feels warmer and less windy than the open-coast beaches closer to Blacklake. The gentle surf, small playground on the sand, and easy access to restrooms and snack spots make it a solid choice for families or anyone who wants a more relaxed day. Parking can be tight on sunny weekends, so go earlier in the day if you want a quick spot near the water.

Shell Beach and Spyglass Park Coves

Blufftop lawns, stairways down to pocket beaches, and some of the best tidepooling and ocean views close to Blacklake.
Unlike the broad sands of Pismo, Shell Beach is all about small coves, rock formations, and lookout points where you can watch pelicans and, in season, migrating whales. Spyglass Park offers a grassy picnic area up top and stairs down to a pocket of sand when the tide is right, plus good tidepools if you time your visit for a lower tide. It is not ideal for big swim days, but perfect when you want a quieter walk, photos, or a quick sunset picnic above the water.
