01
Best overall pick
Doran Regional Park Beach
Bodega Bay Harbor • Wide, Gently Sloping Family Beach • Best Mix Of Access And Calm Water
A broad, sheltered strand along the mouth of Bodega Bay that offers some of the most beginner-friendly waves on this stretch of coast.
Because it sits behind the jetty, Doran usually has smaller surf than the open-ocean beaches nearby, making it a comfortable choice for families and casual wading. There are picnic tables, fire rings, and campgrounds, plus ample paid parking right behind the sand. It can still be windy and chilly even on sunny days, so bring layers and a windbreak if you plan to stay a while.
02
Best for windswept walks
Salmon Creek Beach
North Of Bodega Bay • Open Ocean Surf Beach • Best For Long Walks And Wave-Watching
A long, exposed sandspit backed by dunes and wetlands, ideal for big-sky views and brisk strolls along the breakers.
Salmon Creek stretches for nearly two miles, so you can easily find a quieter patch of sand away from the main access points. The surf and currents here are powerful and notoriously unsafe for swimming, but it’s excellent for beachcombing, birdwatching, flying kites, and watching the waves pound the shore. Expect cool temps, limited shade, and a very classic Sonoma Coast feel.
03
Most dramatic scenery
Goat Rock Beach
Mouth Of The Russian River • Dramatic Coastal Overlook Beach • Best For Scenery And Photography
A striking pocket of sand framed by sea stacks, cliffs, and the Russian River outlet, better for wandering than for wading.
Goat Rock is all about the views: sculpted rock formations, crashing surf, and sweeping vistas up and down the Sonoma Coast. Seals often haul out on the sand near the river mouth, and seasonal closures protect them, so be sure to observe posted signs and keep your distance. The beach is steep and the ocean is dangerous here, so plan on short hikes, photos, and picnic breaks rather than a traditional swim day.
04
Best laid-back escape
Dillon Beach
Tomales Bay Entrance • Laid-Back Village Beach • Great For Dogs And Groups
A broad, gently shelving beach at the edge of a tiny coastal village, popular with dog walkers, surfers, and casual day-trippers.
Dillon Beach feels a bit sleepier than Bodega Bay, with a relaxed, slightly out-of-the-way vibe that rewards the extra drive from Bloomfield. The main beach area is privately managed with a day-use fee, but in exchange you get on-site parking, restrooms, and a small cluster of services in the village. Conditions can range from glassy to blustery, so check the forecast if you’re planning to surf or linger with a beach chair.
05
Best full-service beach town
Stinson Beach
Marin Coast South Of Bloomfield • Classic Day-Trip Beach Town • Best For All-Day Outings
A long, sandy crescent at the base of Mount Tamalpais with a walkable strip of cafés, shops, and classic beach-town energy.
Stinson is a bit farther from Bloomfield than the Sonoma Coast spots, but it offers amenities that make an all-day visit easy: lifeguards in season, picnic areas, and food options steps from the sand. The beach itself is wide and relatively gentle by Pacific standards, though the water is still cold and conditions can change quickly. Parking fills fast on hot weekends, so arriving early or aiming for a shoulder-season visit pays off.
