01
Best overall pick
Paradise Cove, Lake Isabella
East Shore Of Lake Isabella Near Bodfish • Relaxed Lakeside Swim Beach • Balanced Choice For Most Visitors
A broad, gently sloping lakeshore with room for swimmers, paddlers, and cooler chairs all in one place.
Paradise Cove hits a sweet spot between easy access and a laid-back feel, making it an easy choice if you only have time for one beach day. The shoreline is open and forgiving, so it works well for mixed groups where some people want to swim while others just want to sit and watch the wind on the water. Arrive earlier on summer weekends for the best parking and to stake out a comfortable patch of sand and gravel.
02
Best for quiet views
South Fork Recreation Area Shoreline
South Fork Arm Of Lake Isabella • Open, Uncrowded Lakeshore • Ideal For Laid-Back Beach Days
A more open, low-key stretch of Lake Isabella where big sky and mountain views take center stage.
On the South Fork side of the lake, this shoreline tends to feel a bit more spacious and mellow than some of the busier launch areas. You get long views up the valley, with enough room to spread out a blanket and settle in for the afternoon. Bring your own shade and snacks, as facilities are limited and the sun can be intense when the wind drops.
03
Best for camping on the water
Boulder Gulch Recreation Site
North Shore Of Lake Isabella • Campground Beach With Big-Sky Views • Top Pick For Camp-And-Swim Weekends
A popular campground right on the lake, with easy walk-down access to the water from many sites.
If you like to roll out of your tent and straight into the water, Boulder Gulch is hard to beat. The shoreline here is a mix of compacted sand and small stones, with plenty of space to launch inflatables, kayaks, or just wade in. Expect more activity and campground noise in peak season, but in exchange you get sunset views and a very short walk back to your camp chair and campfire.
04
Best for boating and swimming
French Gulch Marina Lakeshore
Northwest Lake Isabella Shoreline • Active Marina Beach • Great For Mixing Water Sports And Lounging
A busy little hub where boaters, swimmers, and anglers share a compact but lively slice of shoreline.
French Gulch works well if your group wants options: some can rent or launch boats while others stay close to shore. The beach itself is on the small side, but the tradeoff is easy access to marina services and a bit of people-watching along the docks. Keep an eye on boat traffic and stick to designated swim areas, especially if you’re visiting with kids or less confident swimmers.
05
Best riverfront hangout
Riverside Park on the Kern River
Kernville Riverfront, North Of Lake Isabella • Tree-Lined Riverbank Beach • Perfect For Cooling Off After Town Exploring
A grassy park with easy access down to the Kern River’s shallow edges and cobble bar “beaches.”
Riverside Park gives you a change of pace from the open lake, with shade trees, picnic tables, and a short walk to Kernville’s cafés and outfitters. When flows are reasonable, families and casual visitors wade and cool off along the cobble bars, treating the river edge like a natural splash zone. Always check river conditions and posted warnings before getting in, as currents and water levels can change dramatically with the season.
