01
Best overall pick
Pacifica State Beach (Linda Mar)
Pacifica – Linda Mar Neighborhood • Wide Crescent Surf Beach • Best All-Around Beach Day Spot
A broad sandy curve with easy access, reliable surf, and a mellow small-town feel just down the coast from Brisbane.
If you only make it to one beach from Brisbane, this is the most balanced choice, with parking, restrooms, and food and coffee across Highway 1. The waves draw both beginners and seasoned surfers, while non-surfers can stroll the shoreline or watch from the sand. Fog and wind are common, so bring layers even on days that start out sunny inland.
02
Most picturesque cove
Rockaway Beach
Pacifica – Rockaway District • Compact Cove With Dramatic Cliffs • Great For Coastal Views And Quick Escapes
A smaller, scenic beach framed by rocky headlands, with a few eateries steps from the sand.
Rockaway feels more intimate than Linda Mar, with rugged bluffs framing a short stretch of sand and a paved promenade behind it. It’s a nice pick when you want ocean air and a sit-down meal or drink without covering much ground. Waves and rip currents can be powerful here, so it’s more of a walking, photo, and picnic beach than a casual swimming spot.
03
Best off-leash dog beach
Fort Funston Beach
Southwest San Francisco Bluffs • Windy Dune-Backed Dog Beach • Top Choice For Dog Owners And Hikers
A wild-feeling stretch of sand beneath high cliffs where dogs and their people roam off-leash for long, windy walks.
Fort Funston is where many Bay Area dog owners head when they want plenty of room to roam and don’t mind sand everywhere. From Brisbane, you’ll climb up to Skyline Boulevard and then drop down to the parking lot above the bluffs, with trails and a steep sand path or stairs leading to the beach. Expect strong winds, soft sand, and minimal amenities, but also sweeping views and a very social dog scene.
04
Best sunset stroll
Ocean Beach
Outer Sunset, San Francisco • Expansive Urban Oceanfront • Go-To For Long Walks And Sunsets
Miles of sand on San Francisco’s western edge, ideal for long walks, bonfires in designated pits, and watching the fog roll over the dunes.
Ocean Beach trades cozy coves for sheer scale, stretching along the edge of the city with dunes, a promenade, and easy transit access once you’re in San Francisco. From Brisbane, it’s a straightforward drive up 280, making it a practical choice when you want space to walk or run without leaving the city grid. The water is cold and currents are dangerous, so treat it as a walking and watching beach, especially near sunset.
05
Easiest quick escape from town
Oyster Cove Beach
South San Francisco Waterfront • Sheltered Bayside Shoreline • Closest Sandy Spot To Brisbane
A small, quiet Bay-side patch of sand near the marina, useful for a quick dose of water and views without committing to the coast drive.
Tucked into Oyster Point Park, this little beach is more about a peaceful shoreline break than a classic wave-crashing scene. It’s just up the road from Brisbane, with a marina, paths, and benches that make it easy to wander or sit and watch planes and boats. The water is not a swimming destination, but it’s a convenient place to stretch your legs by the Bay when you don’t have time to chase the Pacific.
