Best overall mountain beach
Pinecrest Lake Beach
Pinecrest Along Highway 108 • Bustling Mountain Lake Beach • Classic Mountain Lake Hangout
A lively, sandy shoreline with cold, clear water and an easy drive from Cold Springs.
Pinecrest Lake is the go-to swim beach for locals, with a broad stretch of sand, roped-off swim area, and a postcard backdrop of granite and pines. You can park once and have easy access to restrooms, a small market, boat rentals, and the lakeside trail. It gets busy on summer weekends, so arrive earlier in the day if you want a front-row spot near the water.

Closest family river spot
Fraser Flat Day Use Area River Beach
Fraser Flat On The South Fork Stanislaus River • Shaded Riverside Swimming Hole • Best For Kids And Easy River Access
A mellow stretch of the Stanislaus River with shallow pools, picnic tables, and lots of shade.
Just a short drive down from Cold Springs, Fraser Flat offers gentle river access that works well for younger kids and cautious swimmers. The day use area has picnic tables tucked under tall pines, and the river braids into shallower pockets where you can wade, float, or sit in the current on hot afternoons. Bring water shoes—the riverbed is rocky rather than sandy, but the atmosphere is relaxed and less hectic than the big lakes.

Remote escape
Beardsley Lake Day Use Beach
Beardsley Reservoir Off Highway 108 • Quiet Mountain Reservoir Shoreline • Quietest Wild-Feeling Shoreline
A more remote lakeshore with pockets of sand and gravel, big views, and far fewer crowds.
Beardsley Lake sits deeper in the forest past Pinecrest, rewarding the extra drive with a quieter, more rugged feel. The day use area offers lake access where you can spread out on the mixed sand-and-gravel shoreline, launch inflatables, or take a refreshing swim in deep blue water. It’s a good choice if you want a less commercial setting, but services are limited, so pack in your food, water, and shade.

Big reservoir favorite
New Melones Lake – Glory Hole Swim Beach
New Melones Lake Near Angels Camp • Warm-Water Foothill Reservoir Cove • Best Big-Water Swim Spot
A broad reservoir cove with warmer water, sloping shoreline, and plenty of room to spread out.
Down in the foothills, New Melones Lake offers a very different feel from the high Sierra lakes, with hotter air temps and water that warms up nicely by midsummer. The Glory Hole side has designated swim areas and gently sloping shoreline where families can set up chairs and umbrellas between dips. Expect less shade and more sun here, so plan for hats, sunscreen, and plenty of drinking water.

Full-service lake day
Don Pedro Lake – Fleming Meadows Swim Beach
Don Pedro Lake Near La Grange And Jamestown • Busy Recreation Lake Beach • Top Choice For All-Day Lake Amenities
A developed swim beach on a big houseboat lake, with services, boat ramps, and room for groups.
Fleming Meadows on Don Pedro Lake is a classic Central Sierra reservoir beach, popular with boaters and families who want plenty of infrastructure. The swim area sits close to campgrounds, boat launches, and a marina, making it easy to combine time in the water with paddling or a pontoon rental. It’s a bit farther from Cold Springs than the Highway 108 lakes, but a good pick if you’re meeting friends or planning a full weekend on the water.
