5 Best Beaches & Waterfront Escapes Near Covelo California

Covelo may sit in a quiet inland valley, but locals know that a rugged stretch of Mendocino coast lies just over the mountains. A couple of hours’ drive west brings you to windswept bluffs, tidepools full of life, and long empty strands of sand. These five beaches are the spots Covelo residents return to when they need ocean air, big horizons, and a change of pace from the oaks and river bottoms at home.

01

Blues Beach

Westport Coastline • Windy Roadside Ocean Beach • Quick Coastal Fix From Covelo

A classic pull-off north of Westport where you can be on the sand within minutes of parking.

For many Covelo locals, Blues Beach is the first glimpse of open coast after the drive over from the valley. A short path leads down from the roadside bluff to a broad, often windswept beach with plenty of room to spread out. It’s an easy choice when you want maximum ocean time with minimal walking and no fuss.

02

Laguna Point Beach

Mackerricher State Park – Laguna Point • Rocky Tidepool Headland • Best For Tidepools And Seals

A short boardwalk loops around rocky coves where harbor seals haul out and tidepools teem with life at low tide.

Just north of Fort Bragg, Laguna Point feels worlds away from town once you step onto the bluff-top boardwalk. The small coves below hold excellent tidepools, making this a favorite with kids and anyone who likes poking around for anemones, crabs, and sea stars. Bring a windbreaker and time your visit to a lower tide for the best exploring.

03

Ten Mile Beach

Mackerricher State Park – Ten Mile Dunes • Wide, Dune-Backed Ocean Strand • Top Spot For Big-Sky Walks

A sweeping strip of sand backed by dunes and coastal scrub, ideal for long, quiet walks beside the surf.

If you want the feeling of having the coast mostly to yourself, Ten Mile Beach delivers. Access points north of MacKerricher’s main area lead down to a broad, gently sloping beach where you can walk for miles with only shorebirds and breaking waves for company. It’s a great place to clear your head after the winding drive out from Covelo.

04

Glass Beach

Fort Bragg Shoreline • Pocket Cove Beside Town • Classic Stop For First-Time Visitors

A short path from Fort Bragg’s bluff-top trail drops to small coves known for wave-worn sea glass and easy access.

Tucked at the edge of Fort Bragg, Glass Beach is the spot most out-of-towners ask about first, and it’s an easy add-on to any Covelo-to-coast day. While the famous glass has thinned compared with old photos, you can still spot colorful pieces mixed with pebbles in the coves. The surrounding bluff trail offers big views and benches, making it a relaxed place to stretch your legs and watch the waves.

05

Usal Beach

Sinkyone Wilderness Coast • Remote River-Mouth Beach • Go-To For Adventurous Day Trips

A rough road leads to a broad, misty beach at the edge of Sinkyone Wilderness, where elk sometimes graze on the hills above.

Usal Beach is the choice when someone from Covelo says they’re “really heading for the coast” for the day or the weekend. The final stretch of road is narrow and can be rutted, so it’s best for higher-clearance vehicles in dry conditions, but the payoff is a wild-feeling beach with a creek, driftwood, and room to roam. Come self-sufficient, check conditions before you go, and be ready for fog, solitude, and a true North Coast vibe.
