From Fields Landing, this is the quickest way to trade pavement for wild sand and surf, with the ocean on one side and Humboldt Bay on the other. Expect strong wind, big views, and plenty of room to roam, but very few amenities. It’s ideal for beachcombing, watching shorebirds, and catching a moody North Coast sunset from the dunes.

Long, sandy Samoa Beach pairs crashing surf with rolling dunes and off-road access at the edge of Humboldt Bay.
Samoa Dunes is a classic North Coast beach where you can walk for ages with only pelicans and driftwood for company. Parts of the area host off-highway vehicles, but you can easily find quieter stretches if you prefer a simple walk along the tideline. Come for late-afternoon light over the bay and stay to watch the fog drift in over the peninsula.

A broad, gently sloping beach with easy access, seasonal camping, and plenty of room to spread out near the surf.
Clam Beach feels a bit more traditional than the wilder spits, with a parking area, restrooms, and a straightforward walk onto the sand. It’s a go-to spot for long dog walks, kite flying, and digging in the sand while the waves roll in. On clear days, the coastal range frames the horizon, giving even a quick stop a big sense of space.

Moonstone Beach

Sheltered by sea stacks and fed by Little River, Moonstone offers a softer, more playful side of the North Coast.
Here, kids can splash where Little River meets the ocean while adults watch surfers work the outer break. Low tide reveals tidepools and caves tucked into the sea stacks, and the rock outcrops give photographers plenty to work with. It’s a smaller, more intimate beach than the big spits, and a good choice when you want scenery without a long, exposed walk.

The bluffs above offer sweeping views of rocky islands, surf, and coastal forest that feel quintessentially Humboldt. It’s not the quickest stop, but for visitors willing to hike a bit, this is the beach day that feels like a full North Coast postcard in motion.
