01
Best overall pick
Lake Siskiyou Beach
South Of Mount Shasta City • Lively Family-Friendly Lake Beach • Local Go-To On Hot Summer Days
A sandy lakeside beach with buoyed swim areas, rentals, and big views of Mount Shasta.
This is the place most people from Grenada point to when they want a classic beach day without driving to the coast. The main day-use area has a defined swimming zone, shallow water that warms up nicely by mid-summer, and seasonal kayak or SUP rentals for when you want to get farther out on the lake. Parking can fill on prime weekends, so arriving earlier in the day makes things smoother.
02
Best alpine escape
Castle Lake
West Of Mount Shasta City • High-Elevation Swimming Cove • Great For Cold Plunges And Scenery
A clear, high-country lake ringed by granite and pines, with informal shoreline spots for sun and swims.
If you like your beach time on the cooler, quieter side, Castle Lake is worth the winding drive up from town. The shoreline is more rock and dirt than sand, but there are plenty of flat spots to spread a towel and slip into the water for a bracing swim. It stays cooler and less crowded than Lake Siskiyou, especially on weekdays and in the shoulder seasons.
03
Closest to Grenada
Lake Shastina
Near Weed And Lake Shastina Village • Open Reservoir Shoreline • Easy Quick Escape After Work
A broad reservoir with pockets of sandy and pebbly shoreline that locals use for quick swims and sunset hangs.
Lake Shastina is the nearest sizeable water if you just want to cool off without making a full day of it. Water levels shift with the seasons, but when they’re up you can usually find small beachy stretches near public access points for wading, swimming, or launching a kayak. It has more of a laid-back, residential feel than a developed resort vibe, which many locals prefer.
04
Best for camping and swimming
Juanita Lake
Klamath National Forest North Of Macdoel • Quiet Forested Lake Beach • Ideal For Relaxed Weekends
A small, tree-lined lake with a mellow swim area, campground, and easy shoreline trail.
Juanita Lake is a good pick if you want to make your beach time part of a full camping weekend. The day-use area includes a modest little beach and dock where kids can play close to shore while adults unwind in the shade of the pines. A mostly level loop trail around the lake lets you stretch your legs between swims without ever feeling far from the water.
05
Best road-trip stop
Bailey Cove, Shasta Lake
Near Lakehead On Shasta Lake • Sheltered Reservoir Cove • Perfect For Pairing With A Shasta Lake Day
A small, protected cove on Shasta Lake with a swim-friendly shoreline and shaded picnic sites.
If you’re already heading south on I-5, Bailey Cove makes a convenient place to turn a long drive into a mini beach day. A short walk from the parking area brings you to a calm pocket of Shasta Lake where you can swim, picnic, or watch houseboats cruise by. It’s especially nice in the late afternoon, when the sun drops behind the hills and the cove feels tucked away from the highway.
