01
Best overall pick
Point Pinole Regional Shoreline
Richmond Shoreline • Spacious Bayfront Park With Small Beaches • Best For Varied Activities
A huge waterfront park just south of Hercules with trails, fishing piers, and small pocket beaches looking out over San Pablo Bay.
From Hercules, Point Pinole feels like your backyard regional park, with flat walking paths, eucalyptus groves, and broad views across the bay. The small sandy and pebbly beaches here are better for picnics, wading, and skipping stones than for traditional swimming, but the setting is relaxed and easygoing. It’s an excellent choice when your group wants a mix of strolling, kite flying, and hanging out by the water without driving too far.
02
Closest sandy cove
Keller Beach
Point Richmond • Sheltered Neighborhood Cove • Best For A Quick Beach Fix
A compact, sandy beach tucked below the road in Point Richmond, offering calm bay water and a neighborhood feel.
Keller Beach is one of the nearest true sandy spots to Hercules, and it feels pleasantly low-key compared to bigger Bay Area beaches. On warm days locals spread out towels along the narrow strand, kids splash in the usually gentle water, and the hillside houses above give everything a tucked-away vibe. Parking is limited, so it’s smart to come earlier in the day or be ready for a short walk.
03
Laid-back local option
Albany Beach
Albany Waterfront • Urban Bay Beach With A Creative Edge • Best For Relaxed Sunset Strolls
A casual bayfront beach backed by walking paths and the artsy Albany Bulb, popular for dog walkers and mellow evenings.
Albany Beach offers a sandy arc of shoreline with classic views across to San Francisco and the Golden Gate, especially pretty at sunset. The atmosphere is very local—expect joggers, families, and plenty of dogs, plus a slightly scruffy creative energy from the nearby Bulb’s art and driftwood sculptures. It’s ideal when you want a relaxed walk on the sand and easy access to nearby food options along San Pablo Avenue afterward.
04
Classic day-trip beach
Crown Memorial State Beach
Alameda • Long, Shallow Sandy Strand • Best For Families And Groups
A broad, gently sloping beach with warm, shallow bay water, grassy picnic areas, and room to spread out for the day.
Crown Memorial feels like a traditional beach day, with a wide expanse of sand, lifeguards in season, and water that tends to be calmer and a bit warmer than many other Bay Area spots. The adjacent lawns and paths make it easy to mix beach time with biking, kite flying, or big group picnics. From Hercules it’s a slightly longer drive, but the full-service feel and forgiving shoreline make it worth the trip if you have kids or a crowd in tow.
05
Most dramatic setting
Rodeo Beach
Marin Headlands • Pebbly Ocean Beach Backed By Cliffs • Best For Scenery And Photography
A rugged Pacific-facing beach with dark pebbles, headlands, and crashing surf, offering some of the most dramatic views near the Golden Gate.
Rodeo Beach is a different world from the bayfront spots closer to Hercules—here the waves are bigger, the colors richer, and the wind noticeably stronger. The beach itself is more pebbly than sandy, so it’s better for walking, watching surfers, and taking photos than for swimming, which is cold and often rough. Combine a stop here with short hikes in the Marin Headlands and you’ve got a full coastal day trip that still feels doable from the East Bay.
