01
Best overall pick
Healdsburg Veterans Memorial Beach
Healdsburg On The Russian River • Classic Riverside Swimming Beach • Local Favorite Summer Hangout
A dammed stretch of the Russian River creates a broad, lifeguarded swim area with a relaxed, community-park feel.
When Hopland heats up, plenty of locals point the car south to this easygoing Russian River beach. The wide sandy and grassy shore, seasonal lifeguards, and gentle current make it comfortable for most swimmers. Arrive early on hot weekends for parking and space in the shade of the big riparian trees.
02
Best lake option
Pomo Day Use Area, Lake Mendocino
Lake Mendocino East Of Ukiah • Laid-Back Lake Shoreline • Best For Casual Swims And Picnics
A mellow stretch of Lake Mendocino with small, pebbly beaches, picnic tables, and easy water access close to Hopland.
If you want sand and water without committing to the coast drive, Lake Mendocino is the quick fix. The Pomo area offers pockets of beach, a gently sloping shoreline, and plenty of room to spread out a blanket between swims. Expect warm summer water, motorboat noise in busy seasons, and big sky sunsets over the surrounding hills.
03
Best coastal day trip
Big River Beach at Mendocino Headlands State Park
Mendocino Village Coastline • Wide Sandy Estuary Beach • Best For Long Walks And Mellow Surf
A long, flat river-mouth beach where the Big River meets the Pacific, framed by bluffs and the Mendocino skyline.
Big River Beach feels like a payoff after the scenic drive through Anderson Valley and redwood canyons. You get a broad, often wind-swept stretch of sand with room for long walks, driftwood forts, and wading where the river shallows out. Conditions vary, so many people come more for strolling, picnicking, and views of Mendocino than for full-on ocean swimming.
04
Best sheltered cove
Van Damme State Beach
Little River Just South Of Mendocino • Protected Cove Beach • Best For Calm Water And Exploring
A small, crescent-shaped cove with relatively gentle water, tidepools nearby, and kayak access into sea caves when conditions allow.
Tucked below the highway, Van Damme feels more intimate than the bigger beaches up the road. The cove shape often keeps surf manageable, making it a popular spot for waders, beginner paddlers, and folks who just want to sit close to the water. Add a wander through the nearby fern canyon or a coastal paddle tour if you want to turn it into a full-day outing.
05
Most unique shoreline
Glass Beach
Fort Bragg Shoreline • Rocky Sea-Glass Beach • Best For Scenery And Photos, Not Swimming
An unusual cove where waves polish old glass into smooth, colorful pebbles scattered across the rocky shore.
Glass Beach is farther from Hopland than the river and lake spots, but it earns the drive when you want something out of the ordinary. The colorful, frosted glass bits are what everyone comes to see, along with tidepools and rugged bluffs just north of downtown Fort Bragg. The surf and rocks make it more of a wander-and-photograph stop than a place to swim, so plan it as a scenic end to a Mendocino Coast day.
