After the beach, it is an easy stroll to grab fish tacos or a coffee before heading back over the hills toward Kettleman City.

Moonstone Beach is a bit farther from Kettleman City than Pismo or Avila, but it rewards the extra drive with cooler air and dramatic coastal scenery. The sand is broken up by rocky outcrops and driftwood, making it better for exploring, photography, and tide pooling than for a classic play-in-the-waves beach day. The wooden boardwalk that parallels the coast offers easy, scenic walking and plenty of spots to watch the sun drop into the Pacific before you start the return trip inland.
