01
Best overall pick
Sandy Point Day Use Area, Bucks Lake
Bucks Lake East Shore • Wide Pine-Backed Swim Beach • Best Overall Lake Day
A broad sandy lakeshore with room for families, coolers, and kayaks, just a short mountain drive from Meadow Valley.
Sandy Point is the classic Bucks Lake beach: an open sweep of sand and gravel with shady pines close at hand and easy water access. It’s an easy around 30-minute drive up Bucks Lake Road, with parking close enough that you don’t have to lug gear far. Come early on hot weekends for the best spots and stay for the golden light on the surrounding ridges.
02
Closest campground beach
Haskins Valley Day Use Area, Bucks Lake
Bucks Lake North Shore • Campground Cove With Gentle Water • Best For Camping And Swimming
A sheltered cove below the Haskins Valley campgrounds where kids can wade, swim, and watch boats slide past.
Tucked below the Haskins Valley camp area, this small beach feels more intimate than Sandy Point and stays fairly protected from wind and chop. It’s a good choice if you’re camping nearby or want a mellow place for younger swimmers to splash around. Expect a mix of sand and small stones along the shore and a very relaxed, campground-friendly vibe.
03
Best social scene
North Shore Campground Beach, Lake Almanor
Lake Almanor North Shore • Social Lakefront Hangout • Livelier Option For Groups
A busy north-shore Lake Almanor beach with campers, boaters, and plenty of action on sunny days.
On Lake Almanor’s north shore, the beach at North Shore Campground offers a more social scene than the smaller coves around Bucks Lake. It’s about an hour’s drive from Meadow Valley, but you’re rewarded with big-lake views, nearby boat rentals, and lots of people-watching. Pack chairs and a cooler if you plan to spend the whole afternoon by the water.
04
Most convenient day-use setup
Almanor Recreation Area Beach, Lake Almanor
Lake Almanor Southwest Shore • Relaxed Day-Use Shoreline • Easiest Full-Facility Access
A straightforward swim and picnic beach in the Almanor Recreation Area, with classic reservoir views and simple access.
Near Canyon Dam on the southwest shore, this Almanor Recreation Area beach is built for straightforward day use. The shoreline is a mix of small pebbles and packed sand, with lake access gentle enough for wading and swimming when levels are up. Picnic tables and nearby parking make it an easy choice if you want a low-effort lake day after the drive from Meadow Valley.
05
Quietest getaway
Camp Five Recreation Area Beach, Lake Davis
Lake Davis West Shore • Quiet High-Country Reservoir Beach • Best For Uncrowded Afternoons
A laid-back shoreline on Lake Davis where anglers and paddlers outnumber beach umbrellas.
Camp Five on Lake Davis is a good bet when you want space and quiet more than a classic sand strip. The shore here is a mix of dirt, grass, and small rocks, but the tradeoff is wide-open views, fewer people, and often glassy water for paddling. It’s roughly an hour east of Meadow Valley and pairs nicely with a day of fishing or a loop drive through the surrounding forest.
