Iconic Montecito sunset spot
Butterfly Beach
Montecito Waterfront • Scenic, Social Beach • Best Overall Pick
A west-facing stretch of sand where Montecito locals go for golden-hour walks, ocean dips, and classic Channel Islands views.
Butterfly Beach sits in front of grand estates and the Four Seasons Biltmore, but the shoreline itself feels relaxed and walkable. There are no restrooms or big facilities here, just street parking along Channel Drive and stairways down to the sand, so pack what you need. Try to time your visit for late afternoon when the sun sets directly over the water and the promenade-style sidewalk comes alive with joggers, bikers, and dog walkers.
02
Low-tide strolling favorite
Miramar Beach
Near Rosewood Miramar • Relaxed Neighborhood Beach • Best For Laid-Back Walks
Sheltered by homes and the Miramar resort, this narrow beach shines at low tide when there’s plenty of room for long, easy shoreline walks.
Accessed via small public paths tucked between houses, Miramar Beach feels like a quieter, more tucked-away cousin to Butterfly. At low tide you can walk for quite a distance in either direction, watching trains roll by on the blufftop tracks and surfers picking off waves on nearby sandbars. Parking is limited on the residential streets, so consider coming early or midweek for the most relaxed experience.
03
Under-the-radar local spot
Hammonds Beach
Eastern Montecito • Quiet Local Surf Spot • Best For Uncrowded Feel
A mellow pocket of sand and reef off a residential lane, popular with surfers and dog walkers who prefer a low-key, no-frills beach day.
Reached by a short path at the end of a Montecito cul-de-sac, Hammonds Beach has a distinctly local, unpolished charm. There’s a reef that draws surfers on the right swell, tide pools to poke around at lower tides, and usually enough space to spread out without feeling packed in. There are no services and parking is strictly street-only, so it’s best for people who are comfortable going light and treating the visit like a neighborhood beach outing.

Activity hub on the waterfront
East Beach
Santa Barbara Waterfront • Amenity-Rich City Beach • Best For Groups And Amenities
A long, palm-lined beach just west of Montecito with volleyball courts, bike paths, lawns, and easy access to restrooms and snacks.
East Beach is where Santa Barbara leans into its classic postcard look, and it’s a quick hop from Montecito via Cabrillo Boulevard. You’ll find beach volleyball courts, generous sand for spreading out, a wide bike and pedestrian path, and grassy areas perfect for group picnics. With lifeguards in season, public restrooms, and nearby cafés, it’s a strong option if your group wants a full-service beach without driving far from Montecito.

Dog-lovers’ go-to
Arroyo Burro Beach (Hendry’s Beach)
Santa Barbara Mesa • Dog-Friendly County Beach • Best For Dogs And Casual Dining
A broad cove backed by bluffs, popular with dog owners, casual surfers, and families who want parking, restrooms, and a beachside restaurant.
Known locally as Hendry’s, Arroyo Burro is a short drive west of Montecito and offers more of a county-park feel than a resort backdrop. There’s a large parking lot, rinse showers, restrooms, and a popular restaurant with an ocean-view patio right at the sand. Walk west at low tide and you’ll find a de facto off-leash stretch for dogs, plus scenic bluffs and tide-sculpted cliffs that feel far from town even though you’re still close in.
