ATVs, off-road vehicles, and fat-tire bikes roll across the sand, with quieter walking stretches if you move away from the main access points. Go for golden-hour light on the dunes, but check current regulations and tide conditions before driving onto the beach.

Avila Beach pairs a protected crescent of sand with a compact waterfront village that’s easy to enjoy in a single stroll.
When the wind is up in Pismo, many Nipomo folks continue north to Avila for its more sheltered bay and generally warmer feel. The beach sits right in front of a small promenade lined with cafés, wine tasting rooms, and ice cream spots that make it kid- and grandparent-friendly. Add in the pier, calm shallows near the shore, and nearby hot springs, and you have a relaxed, all-ages outing.

The beach here tends to be less crowded than Pismo, with broad sand and impressive dune backdrops that are ideal for walking, birdwatching, and photography. Bring layers for the frequent wind and plan on a more contemplative, nature-focused visit than a typical towel-and-umbrella day.
