01
Best overall pick
Zuma Beach
North Malibu Coast • Wide, Classic Socal Beach • Best For All-Day Beach Days
A long, wide stretch of sand with easy access, steady surf, and room for just about every kind of beach day.
From Oak Park, Zuma is the go-to when you want the full Malibu experience without fuss: big parking lots, plenty of sand, and lifeguards along the shore. The surf can be punchy but there’s ample space to spread out, toss a frisbee, or set up a full-day camp with chairs and coolers. Arrive earlier on summer weekends to beat the traffic coming over Kanan Road.
02
Most photogenic cove
El Matador State Beach
West Malibu Bluffs • Dramatic Cove With Sea Stacks • Best For Photos And Sunsets
A steep staircase leads down to a pocket beach framed by sea caves, arches, and towering rock formations.
El Matador is the spot Oak Park locals pick when they want ‘wow’ factor: golden cliffs, rock arches, and some of the best sunset light on the coast. The beach itself is smaller and more rugged, so it’s better for wandering, exploring, and shooting photos than full-on sports or big setups. Parking is limited along PCH, so plan for a bit of a hunt on busy evenings.
03
Best tidepooling and exploring
Leo Carrillo State Beach
Far-West Malibu Shoreline • Rocky Coves With Tidepools And Campground • Great For Families Who Like To Explore
A mix of sandy pockets, rocky reef, and tunnels makes this a favorite for tidepools, light surf, and camping by the beach.
Leo Carrillo is a versatile choice if you’re driving out from Oak Park with kids or a mixed group: there are tidepools at low tide, mellow waves in the main cove, and plenty of nooks to explore. The adjacent state campground means you’ll see a lot of weekenders walking down from their sites, giving it a relaxed, outdoorsy feel. Check the tide charts before you go if tidepooling is the main goal.
04
Best coastal viewpoint
Point Dume State Beach
Point Dume Headland • Scenic Bluff-Backed Beach • Great For Views And Whale Watching
A sweeping sandy cove backed by cliffs, with a short bluff-top trail that serves up some of Malibu’s best ocean vistas.
Point Dume feels like a mini escape, even for Oak Park locals used to quick runs to the coast: you get a proper little hike with big payoffs in views. The beach below is quieter than Zuma, with decent space for lounging and wading, and in winter and spring you might spot migrating whales from the bluff. Parking is tight near the headland, so be prepared for a short neighborhood walk in peak times.
05
Best beach-and-hike combo
Sycamore Cove Beach
Point Mugu Corridor • Beach At The Mouth Of A Canyon • Perfect For Coastal Hikes Plus Sand
A sheltered cove paired with canyon trailheads, ideal when you want a short hike and a relaxed post-hike swim or picnic.
Just a bit farther up the coast from Malibu proper, Sycamore Cove gives Oak Park residents an easy way to mix mountains and ocean in a single outing. You can start on one of the nearby Point Mugu State Park trails, then drop back to the sand for a picnic and a quick dip. It’s smaller and calmer than the big Malibu beaches, which makes it a nice choice when you want a slower, more low-key day.
