01
Iconic boardwalk scene
Santa Cruz Main Beach
Santa Cruz Boardwalk Area • Lively Boardwalk Beach • Best For Classic Boardwalk Fun
Big, sandy, and busy, this is the go-to beach when you want rides, cotton candy, and real surf all in one stop.
From Patterson, this is the classic full-day coastal escape: ride over the hill, park near the Boardwalk, and step straight onto the sand. The waves are usually gentle enough for casual swimming and boogie boarding, and you’ve got food, arcades, and rides a few steps away. Expect summer crowds, but also that unmistakable California beach-town energy you don’t get anywhere in the valley.
02
Pier and campground combo
Seacliff State Beach
Aptos • Pier-Side State Beach • Great For Long Walks And Easy Access
A long, mostly level stretch of sand backed by bluffs, with a pier and camp area that keep things relaxed but not sleepy.
Seacliff is a favorite for Patterson families who want a simple beach setup without the Boardwalk scene. The parking lot sits right above the sand, so you’re not hauling coolers down endless stairs, and the beach is wide enough to spread out. It’s ideal for tide watching, strolling down toward Rio del Mar, and letting kids dig for hours while you watch the old concrete ship at the pier.
03
Classic coast escape
Half Moon Bay State Beach
Half Moon Bay • Wide Coastal Bluff Beach • Top Pick For Cool, Breezy Summers
Four connected beaches create one long, scenic sweep of sand below low bluffs and coastal trails.
When Patterson is baking, Half Moon Bay often feels 20 degrees cooler, with fog, breeze, and steady surf. You can park at one of the state beach lots and wander the Coastal Trail above the sand, dropping down where it looks good. It’s more about walks, kites, and picnics than swimming, but the open views and steady roar of the ocean make it a rewarding day trip.
04
Laid-back local stretch
Del Monte Beach
Monterey • Relaxed City Shoreline • Best Sunset Picnic Spot
A quieter Monterey option with plenty of sand, low dunes, and a more local feel than the tourist-heavy waterfront nearby.
Del Monte sits just off the main drag in Monterey but feels surprisingly low-key once you get onto the sand. Locals come here for sunset walks, casual surf sessions, and simple beach picnics without a lot of buildup or boardwalk noise. From Patterson it’s a longer drive, but you can easily pair it with a stop at Cannery Row or the wharf before heading back over Pacheco Pass or 101.
05
Closest sandy shoreline
Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach
Alameda • Calm Bayfront Beach • Best Close-To-Home Option
Shallow, gentle bay water and a long sandy stretch make this one of the most approachable beaches for a quick Patterson escape.
Crown Beach in Alameda is often the first true sand-and-water stop for Patterson residents who don’t want to drive all the way to the open coast. The bay here is shallow and usually calm, which is less intimidating for small kids and casual wading. You get views of the San Francisco skyline, grassy picnic areas, and a walking path, all within a drive that fits comfortably into a half-day outing.
