On the north side of Red Bluff, Dog Island Park gives you river access without leaving town. There’s a small sandy and gravel shoreline where people wade out, toss sticks for their dogs, and watch the current slide by. Come for a quick swim, a walk along the paths, and sunset views of the river with the convenience of nearby shops and diners.

About an hour from Proberta, Black Butte Lake’s Buckhorn area is where many locals go when they want a full “lake day.” The designated swim beach has an easy entry, warm summer water, and space to spread out on the shoreline. Add in boat ramps, picnic areas, and big-sky views over the hills and you’ve got an easygoing spot for groups and families.

It feels more natural than a city park, so plan to bring what you need and pack everything back out.

It’s a great choice if you want a more polished beach experience with classic Northern California scenery.
