01
Best overall pick
Sand Pond, Lakes Basin
Lakes Basin Recreation Area • Shallow Family Swim Cove • Best For Kids And Relaxed Wading
A small, sandy-edged pond with warm shallows and big Sierra Buttes views, ideal for low-key swimming days.
About a half-hour south of Sattley, Sand Pond is the easiest true “beach day” in the high country, with a gentle entry and sandy pockets perfect for spreading towels. The water stays relatively shallow along the shore, so kids and cautious swimmers can splash without feeling rushed by deeper water. Arrive early on hot weekends to snag a shady spot along the edge of the trees.
02
Most dramatic scenery
Lower Sardine Lake Day Use Area
Near Sierra City • Alpine Lake With Dramatic Peaks • Top Pick For Big Mountain Views
A small pebble-and-sand shoreline where you can swim or launch a kayak beneath the sheer face of the Sierra Buttes.
Lower Sardine Lake feels almost oversized for how close it is to Sattley, with the Sierra Buttes rising straight from the water. The day-use area has a modest beachy edge and access for small boats and paddleboards, plus enough shoreline nooks to stretch out between dips. It’s a great choice if you want a swim with a postcard backdrop rather than a crowded resort scene.
03
Best for paddlers
Gold Lake Day Use Shoreline
Upper Lakes Basin • Spacious High-Country Shoreline • Best For Paddlers And All-Day Picnics
A big, blue alpine lake with scattered sandy pockets and granite outcrops that make it easy to find your own little beach.
Gold Lake is one of the larger waters in Lakes Basin, and the shoreline near the campground and day-use pullouts offers several informal beach areas. It’s especially good if you’re bringing kayaks or paddleboards and want room to explore between swims. Pack a full picnic—once you’re settled on the granite and sand with those views, you won’t be in a hurry to leave.
04
Quiet local escape
Honker Cove Beach, Lake Davis
North Of Portola • Wide Reservoir Beach With Room To Roam • Great For Uncrowded Summer Days
A gently sloping lakeshore with coarse sand and gravel, plenty of sun, and wide-open space compared with Tahoe crowds.
Roughly 45 minutes northeast of Sattley, Lake Davis offers a calmer, more local-feeling beach experience than the bigger name lakes. The Honker Cove area has easy shoreline access, mellow water for swimming on warm days, and enough space that groups can spread out without feeling stacked on top of each other. Bring shade, as the shoreline is fairly exposed but rewards you with big sky and long views across the reservoir.
05
Classic lake day
Kings Beach State Recreation Area
North Lake Tahoe • Classic Tahoe Sand Beach • Worth-The-Drive Tahoe Day Trip
A broad stretch of golden sand on Lake Tahoe’s north shore with shallow, clear water and a lively but relaxed town backdrop.
About an hour and fifteen minutes from Sattley via Highway 89 and Truckee, Kings Beach is the spot when you want the full Tahoe beach experience. The sand is soft, the water stays shallow for a good distance, and there are rentals, snacks, and shaded picnic tables just off the shore. It’s busier than the local lakes, but the combination of amenities, swimming, and classic Tahoe views makes it a solid day-trip anchor.
