01
Best overall pick
Campus Point Beach
On Campus • On-Campus Surf And Hangout Spot • Closest Sand To Ucsb Classes
A classic UCSB experience where you can walk from lecture halls straight onto a surfable sandy point.
If you only hit one beach while you’re at UCSB, make it Campus Point. The small point creates consistent waves for shortboarders and longboarders, while the broad sand makes it easy to spread out with friends between sessions. Parking can be tricky on busy days, so most people walk or bike in from campus and Isla Vista.
02
Easiest access
Goleta Beach Park
Goleta • Pier-Side Family Beach Park • Best For Picnics And Easy Access
A flat, grassy park that blends smoothly into a wide sandy beach and long fishing pier just south of campus.
Goleta Beach is the go-to spot when you want car-to-sand convenience and room for a group. The park has big lawns, picnic tables, barbecues, and restrooms, making it popular for student org events and visiting families. The long pier is great for sunset strolls and casual fishing without having to head into downtown Santa Barbara.
03
Most natural feel
Sands Beach at Coal Oil Point
Isla Vista West Side • Wild-Feeling Protected Shoreline • Best For Sunset Walks And Tide Watching
A broad, dune-backed stretch of sand at the edge of Isla Vista that feels surprisingly wild and open.
Sands Beach sits within the Coal Oil Point Reserve, so it has a more natural feel than most student-adjacent beaches. Surfers favor the sandbars and nearby points, while walkers come for long, uncrowded shoreline strolls and big-sky sunsets. Respect posted signs and stay clear of fenced areas, which protect nesting Western snowy plovers in season.
04
Classic city pick
Leadbetter Beach
Santa Barbara Waterfront • Harborfront City Beach • Classic In-Town Beach Day
A long, gently curving beach by Santa Barbara City College with views of the harbor, the Mesa bluffs, and sailboats sliding by.
Leadbetter is where the city and the coastline blend together in the most photogenic way. The mellow waves and shallow entry make it a comfortable place for paddleboarding, beginner surfing, and casual swims, while the adjacent lawn is perfect for barbeques and frisbee. It’s a straight shot from UCSB down Highway 101, so it often becomes the default meetup spot for mixed groups of students and locals.
05
Best with dogs
Arroyo Burro Beach (Hendry's Beach)
Mesa / West Santa Barbara • Bluff-Backed Dog-Friendly Strand • Best For Dogs And Casual Dining
A scenic, bluff-lined beach where locals bring their dogs to run off-leash on the sand and grab a bite right above the waves.
Known simply as Hendry’s to most locals, Arroyo Burro feels laid-back and a little tucked away compared to the downtown waterfront. The off-leash zone makes it a favorite for dog owners, while the beachfront restaurant and bar give you an easy excuse to linger after a walk. At low tide you can wander far along the base of the cliffs, but keep an eye on the swell and tide so you don’t get pinched off on the way back.
