01
Best overall pick
Half Moon Bay State Beach
Half Moon Bay Waterfront • Classic Wide Sandy Strand • Best All-Around Choice
A long, sandy shoreline with easy access, coastal trails, and enough space to spread out on busy weekends.
If you only have time for one beach run from West Menlo Park, this is the safest bet. Multiple parking lots, restrooms, and a paved bluff-top trail make it user-friendly whether you’re walking the dog, pushing a stroller, or just chasing a sunset. It can get busy near main lots, but a short walk north or south usually leads to quieter sand.
02
Most dramatic coastal setting
San Gregorio State Beach
San Gregorio Coastline • Dramatic Bluff-Backed Shore • Great For Coastal Scenery
A wide creek meets the ocean below tall cliffs, creating a striking mix of lagoon, sand, and surf.
Reached via Highway 84 and Highway 1, San Gregorio feels farther from town than it really is. The high bluffs and often-misty light give the beach an almost cinematic mood, especially at low tide when there’s more sand to roam. It’s better for walks, photos, and picnics than swimming, thanks to chilly water and changing surf.
03
Best low-key picnic spot
Pomponio State Beach
South Of Half Moon Bay • Relaxed Picnic-Friendly Cove • Best For Low-Key Hangouts
A sheltered-feeling stretch of sand with bluffs, picnic tables, and a quieter vibe than the big-name beaches.
Pomponio sits just far enough south of Half Moon Bay to shed some of the weekend crowds. The picnic area above the sand makes it an easy spot to base for a few hours, especially if you’re bringing food from the Peninsula. Expect classic Highway 1 scenery, with room to wander the shoreline when the tide is cooperating.
04
Best for tide pools and exploring
Pescadero State Beach
Pescadero Coast • Rugged Tide Pool Shoreline • Best For Tide Pooling
Rocky outcrops, coves, and shifting sandbars make this a favorite for low-tide exploring rather than pure sunbathing.
Just south of the town of Pescadero, this state beach trades wide, uniform sand for a more rugged, exploratory coastline. On good low tides, the rocky areas reveal tide pools and sea life that reward a slow, careful walk. Pair it with a stop in Pescadero for snacks or coffee on your way back to West Menlo Park.
05
Iconic surf-viewing spot
Mavericks Beach
Pillar Point Harbor, North Of Half Moon Bay • Working Harbor And Surf Lookout • Iconic Big-Wave Vantage Point
A short, mostly flat walk leads to the viewing area for the famed Mavericks big-wave surf break and a compact stretch of beach.
While the giant waves break offshore and only during the right winter swells, the walk out along the harbor side path is worthwhile year-round. You’ll pass fishing boats and harbor activity before reaching the bluff-top and beach area where you can look out toward the Mavericks break. The sand is limited, but the mix of working harbor, coastal trail, and surf culture makes this a distinct outing from West Menlo Park.
