Classic seaside icon
Santa Cruz Main Beach
Santa Cruz Waterfront • Lively Boardwalk Beach • Classic Seaside Amusement Hub
The broad strip of sand in front of the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is the area’s most iconic, people-watching heavy beach day.
From Zayante, this is the go-to spot when you want the full Santa Cruz experience in one stop—sand, surf, and the Boardwalk’s rides and arcades all steps apart. The beach is wide and flat, with volleyball courts, kayak and SUP rentals nearby, and easy access to snacks along the promenade. Parking can fill on summer weekends, so aim for earlier in the day or a late-afternoon stroll and sunset.

Best overall pick
Capitola Beach
Capitola Village • Quaint Village Beachfront • Ideal For Relaxed Village Days
Capitola Beach delivers a compact, sheltered stretch of sand backed by colorful buildings and cafés just a few steps away.
If you want something a little calmer than the Boardwalk but still full of character, Capitola is hard to beat. The beach sits at the heart of the village, with gentle waves, a small wharf, and plenty of spots to grab coffee, gelato, or a waterside meal. It’s an easy place to mix a few hours on the sand with poking around shops and watching the light change over the lagoon and cliffs.

Local favorite hangout
Seabright State Beach
Between Santa Cruz And Capitola • Wide Neighborhood Strand • Top Choice For Evening Fires
Seabright offers a deep, open beach popular with locals, with fire rings, views of the lighthouse, and a relaxed residential backdrop.
Tucked between the harbor and the Boardwalk, Seabright feels more like a neighborhood beach than a tourist magnet. It’s great for long walks, tossing a frisbee, and staying into the evening for a permitted fire in one of the rings when conditions allow. Access is straightforward from nearby street parking, and you can easily wander over to the harbor or the small cluster of bars and eateries on Seabright Avenue.

Best for tide pools
Natural Bridges State Beach
Westside Santa Cruz • Scenic State Park Cove • Go-To For Tide Pools And Sunsets
Natural Bridges pairs a compact sandy cove with rocky reefs, tide pools, and one of the county’s most photogenic coastal formations.
When the tide is low, you can wander the rocky edges and explore sea stars, anemones, and crabs in clearly marked tide-pooling areas. The remaining stone arch off the beach makes a striking backdrop for photos, especially at golden hour. There are picnic tables, restrooms, and short trails through the adjacent monarch butterfly grove in season, making it an easy half-day escape from the mountains.

Best for camping
New Brighton State Beach
Capitola To Aptos Bluffline • Bluff-Top Shoreline With Campground • Best Pick For Camping By The Ocean
New Brighton combines a long sandy beach with a bluff-top state park campground and mellow, family-friendly atmosphere.
If you want to make your Zayante-to-coast trip an overnight, this is the closest state beach campground that still feels tucked into nature. Trails lead from the eucalyptus-shaded campsites down to a wide, gently sloping beach that’s good for walking, wading, and beachcombing. Even on a day visit, the higher vantage points along the bluffs offer big views of Monterey Bay and a quieter feel than the downtown beaches.
