5 Best Hiking Trails & Places To Hike Near Alhambra California

From Alhambra, the San Gabriel Mountains and nearby city hillsides offer hiking trails in almost every direction.[2][5][7] Waterfall canyons, pine-scented ridges, and skyline overlooks are all within a 10–30 minute drive. Whether you want a quick after-work climb or a full morning in the mountains, these five spots are where locals actually lace up and go.

01

Eaton Canyon Falls Trail

Pasadena Foothills • Waterfall Canyon Trail • Classic Local Favorite

Classic waterfall hike in Eaton Canyon that packs lush creekside scenery, a bit of rock-hopping, and a big payoff without a long drive from Alhambra.[2][5]

Starting from the Eaton Canyon Nature Center, this popular out-and-back follows a sandy wash and shaded creek to a 40-foot waterfall, with plenty of spots to splash around.[2][5] The mileage is manageable for most beginners, but the rocky stream crossings near the end mean sturdy shoes are a good idea. Go early on hot weekends, when the lower canyon can feel exposed and the main parking lot fills fast.

02

Echo Mountain via Sam Merrill Trail

Altadena • Steep Historic Summit Route • Best For Big Views And A Workout

A steady climb from the Cobb Estate up to the ruins of Echo Mountain’s old railway resort, with wide-open views over Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley the whole way.[2][5]

The Sam Merrill Trail wastes no time gaining elevation, switchbacking up a sun-exposed slope to reach Echo Mountain’s foundations and weathered machinery.[2] It is a favorite training hike for local trail runners and hikers thanks to its straightforward path and rewarding vistas. Expect little shade, so plan for an early start or a sunset lap, bring plenty of water, and be courteous about street parking in the surrounding neighborhood.

03

Sturtevant Falls Trail

Chantry Flat Above Arcadia • Shady Forested Creek Hike • Best For A Cool Mountain Morning

A classic San Gabriel Mountains canyon walk from Chantry Flat to a tall, fern-fringed waterfall, passing historic cabins and a lively creek along the way.[2]

Once you drop down the paved road from Chantry Flat, the trail settles into a cool, mostly shaded canyon lined with oaks, sycamores, and old-time weekend cabins.[2] The route is moderate rather than difficult, but remember that the climb back to the parking lot comes at the end of your hike. Arrive early on weekends, when Chantry Flat’s small lot fills quickly and roadside parking rules are closely enforced.

04

Ascot Hills Park

El Sereno / Northeast Los Angeles • Urban Hillside Open-Space Loops • Best Quick After-Work Workout

Rolling dirt roads and singletrack just west of Alhambra, offering short but punchy loops with big-sky views of downtown Los Angeles and the San Gabriel range.[5][7]

Ascot Hills feels surprisingly wild for being tucked right against the city, with chaparral-covered slopes, ridge-top benches, and trails that can be linked into anything from a 20-minute stroll to a sweaty hill-repeat session.[5] It is close enough for Alhambra locals to hit before or after work, and the open terrain makes it a great spot to watch sunset light up the skyline. Shade is limited, so bring a hat and avoid the hottest mid-afternoon hours in summer.

05

Ernest E. Debs Regional Park

Monterey Hills / Northeast Los Angeles • Chaparral Ridge Park With City Overlooks • Best Casual Weekend Wander

A broad swath of rolling hills and easygoing ridge trails just west of Alhambra, perfect for low-key hikes, dog walks, and big city views without a long drive.[7]

Debs Park offers a web of wide dirt paths and narrower singletrack, so you can tailor a loop from a short family walk to a few miles of meandering exploration.[7] The small pond near the Audubon Center, scattered picnic spots, and mellow grades make it especially friendly for kids and casual hikers. Come at golden hour for the best light over downtown and the San Gabriels, and bring water—amenities on the hilltops are minimal.
