Closest stroll
Alondra Park Reservoir Loop
Alondra Park Neighborhood • Flat Lakeside Path With Park Vibes • Right-In-Town Option
A mellow paved loop around the water that’s perfect for stretching your legs without leaving the neighborhood.
The loop circles the small lake with views of ducks, palms, and weekend soccer games, making it an easy everyday walk. Go for a couple of laps if you want a bit more distance or mix in the park’s paths and lawns for a longer wander.
02
Best skyline views
Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area
Baldwin Hills • Urban Hilltop Park With Dirt Trails • Panorama-Chasing Pick
Rolling trails and stair climbs lead to wide views over downtown, the South Bay, and on clear days, the mountains.
From the main parking areas you can link dirt paths, stairs, and fire roads into loops that feel surprisingly wild for the middle of the city. The ridge-top viewpoints are especially pretty at sunset, when the skyline glows and planes trace lines into LAX. It’s a solid choice when you want real elevation gain without committing to an all-day drive.
03
Top coastal escape
Portuguese Bend Reserve
Palos Verdes Peninsula • Coastal Bluff Network Of Singletrack • Ocean-View Adventure
Steep but manageable trails wind through open hillsides with sweeping Pacific views and sea breeze.
Starting high above the coast, trails drop through coastal sage scrub toward the ocean with side paths to overlooks and spur ridges. The footing can be loose and dusty in places, but the tradeoff is uninterrupted views of Catalina Island and the South Bay coastline. Aim for early morning or late afternoon for cooler temps and softer light on the water.
04
Classic LA hike
Griffith Park – Mount Hollywood Loop
Hollywood Hills • Iconic Urban Park With Rugged Ridges • Film-Location Favorite
A well-traveled loop from near the observatory up Mount Hollywood with postcard views over the city and the Hollywood Sign.
You’ll share the trail with plenty of locals and visitors, but the mix of chaparral, switchbacks, and big vistas earns its popularity. Start near Griffith Observatory, climb the broad dirt paths to the summit, and loop back on a slightly different route for variety. Parking can fill quickly, so earlier starts make the whole outing smoother.
05
Best waterfall outing
Eaton Canyon Falls Trail
San Gabriel Foothills • Shaded Canyon Trail With Creek Crossings • Cooler-Weather Favorite
A popular canyon walk that follows a rocky creek bed to a photogenic waterfall when flows are running.
The first stretch is mostly flat and exposed, then the route narrows into the canyon with boulders, shallow crossings, and more shade. Expect crowds on weekends and be ready to hop rocks to keep your feet dry. Check recent conditions before you go, as water levels and access rules can change after storms.
