01
Best overall pick
Amador City and Bunker Hill Trail
In-Town Foothills • Historic Foothill Loop • Best In-Town Hike
A moderate loop that climbs from Amador City into oak-dotted hills with Gold Rush history underfoot and wide views over the valley.
This is the go-to hike when you want to stay close to town but still feel like you have gotten out into the hills. The route follows old mining roads and singletrack, with enough elevation gain to feel like real exercise without demanding an all-day commitment. Go in the late afternoon for cooler temps and a great look at the sun dropping over the foothills on your way back into town.
02
Easiest lakeside walk
Lake Tabeaud Loop Trail
Northeast Of Jackson • Relaxed Lakeside Circuit • Best For Casual Walkers
A mostly level path circling a small reservoir, popular for easy walks, bird-watching, and kid-friendly outings.
Just a short drive from Jackson, Lake Tabeaud offers a gentle loop that is ideal when you want scenery without much climbing. The trail rolls around the water through oaks and pines, with frequent spots to sit, snack, or let kids explore the shoreline. It is especially pleasant in spring and fall, when the hills are green and the light on the water is soft.
04
Top high-elevation challenge
Thunder Mountain Trail
Carson Pass On Highway 88 • High-Country Summit Route • Best For Big Views
A strenuous high-elevation climb that rewards the effort with sweeping views over Silver Lake, volcanic peaks, and distant ranges.
Once Highway 88 opens fully, Thunder Mountain becomes one of the most rewarding day hikes within striking distance of Amador City. The trail climbs steadily through open forest and meadows into stark, volcanic terrain, with long sightlines that keep getting better the higher you go. Aim for mid-summer through early fall for dry trail, wildflowers, and clear views, and be ready for thinner air and changeable weather compared with the foothills.
05
Most scenic short hike
Shealor Lake Trail
Highway 88 Above Silver Lake • Short Alpine Lake Hike • Best Quick Alpine Escape
A short but rugged path that drops over granite slabs to a clear blue lake ringed by cliffs and pines.
Shealor Lake is what many locals think of when they picture a classic Highway 88 alpine outing that does not take all day. The descent from the trailhead crosses open granite with wide views before slipping down to a sheltered basin with inviting swimming and picnic spots. The climb back out is steeper than the mileage suggests, so bring good shoes, sun protection, and enough time to linger by the water.
