01
Best overall redwood escape
The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park
Aptos Creek Canyon • Redwood Canyon State Park • Best All-Around Redwood Hiking
A sprawling second-growth redwood park with enough trails to fill anything from a lunch-break wander to a full-day adventure.
If you only have time for one hike near Aptos, make it Nisene Marks. Start from the Aptos Creek Fire Road for an easy out-and-back along the creek, or peel off onto side trails like West Ridge for quieter singletrack and more elevation. Expect cool shade, birdsong, and a quick transition from town into deep, green forest.
02
Waterfall day hike
Maple Falls via Bridge Creek Trail
Upper Nisene Marks • Remote Waterfall Forest Trail • Best Adventurous Day Hike
A longer, rougher outing through lush canyon forest that rewards persistence with a classic Santa Cruz Mountains waterfall.
This is the hike locals recommend when you say you want a real leg-stretcher in the Aptos redwoods. From the lower Nisene Marks parking area, follow Aptos Creek Road to the Bridge Creek Trail and settle in for several creek crossings, roots, and short scrambly sections. It feels increasingly remote the farther you go, and the mossy walls and narrow falls at the turnaround point make the effort worthwhile.
03
Quiet mindful loop
Land of Medicine Buddha Loop Trail
Soquel Hills North Of Aptos • Quiet Spiritual Redwood Retreat • Best For Reflection And Short Loops
A peaceful loop through shaded redwoods and prayer flags, with gentle grades that suit thoughtful walking more than peak-bagging.
Tucked in the Soquel hills just a short drive from Aptos, this loop blends classic Santa Cruz redwood scenery with the calm atmosphere of an active Buddhist retreat. The trail undulates more than it climbs, making it manageable for casual hikers who still want to feel like they’ve left the suburbs behind. Go early or on a weekday for a quieter experience and remember this is a working retreat center, so keep voices low and respect posted signs.
04
Easiest ocean-view walk
Seacliff to New Brighton Bluff Trails
Aptos Seaside Bluffs • Laid-Back Coastal Bluff And Beach Walk • Best Close-To-Town Ocean Views
An easy-going mix of packed paths and beach walking that strings together iconic pier views, coastal bluffs, and picnic-friendly overlooks.
When the fog lifts or the sunset looks promising, locals head to the short trails linking Seacliff State Beach and New Brighton. You can stay high on the bluffs for big views of Monterey Bay, then drop down to the sand if you feel like a barefoot stretch. Parking can fill quickly on summer weekends, so go early or aim for late afternoon and bring an extra layer—the breeze off the water can be cooler than it looks from town.

Best full-day outing
Wilder Ranch State Park
North Of Town Toward Santa Cruz • Historic Coastal Ranch With Cliffside Trails • Best Full-Day Coastal Outing
A broad network of oceanfront and inland loops where you can stack shorter trails into a full day of sea cliffs, farms, and open grasslands.
Wilder Ranch is a bit farther from Aptos but pays off with some of the best coastal hiking in the county. Start from the historic ranch complex and head out on the coastal terraces for cliff-edge views, sea caves, and constant surf noise, or choose one of the inland loops if you prefer rolling hills and wider vistas. The trails are mostly gentle but exposed, so pack sun protection and enough water if you plan to link several loops together.
