Best in-town views
Arcata Ridge Trail
West Arcata Ridgeline • In-Town Ridge Hike With Mixed Terrain • Best Close-To-Town Views
A rolling ridge walk on the west side of town with peeks toward Humboldt Bay and quiet forest stretches.
The Arcata Ridge Trail links greenbelts along the city’s western edge, giving you a sense of space without leaving town. Expect a mix of singletrack, old roads, and transitions between open clearings and second-growth forest. It is a great choice if you want a longer, more linear outing than the tight loops in the Community Forest.

Best coastal scenery
Trinidad Head Trail
Trinidad Headlands • Coastal Bluff And Headland Loop • Iconic Ocean-View Hike
A short but dramatic loop around a rocky headland with constant Pacific views and sea-bird activity.
Just fifteen minutes north of Arcata, Trinidad Head packs in big scenery for minimal effort. The loop circles the promontory above Trinidad Harbor, with viewpoints looking down on sea stacks, beaches, and often passing whales in season. It is mostly exposed, so bring a windbreaker and expect fog, sun, or both in the same hour.

Best quick adventure
Strawberry Rock Trail
North Of Trinidad • Forest-And-Viewpoint Out-And-Back • Quick Half-Day Adventure
A steady climb through mixed forest to a rocky perch with sweeping views of the coastline and inland hills.
Strawberry Rock feels like a classic Humboldt rite of passage: a straightforward uphill walk that rewards you with a standout viewpoint. The trail leaves from the east side of Highway 101, then winds through second-growth forest before breaking out onto the namesake rock. Expect some mud in wet season and a bit of scrambling near the top, but the panorama makes it worthwhile.

Most unique landscape
Ma-le'l Dunes Trails
Humboldt Bay Dunes • Wild Dunes And Beach Ramble • Best For Sunset And Solitude
Looping paths over shifting dunes and coastal scrub that drop onto a wide, often empty beach.
West of Arcata near Manila, the Ma-le'l Dunes area offers a very different kind of hike from the nearby forests. Trails weave through coastal pines and open dunes, with soft sand underfoot and big sky overhead before reaching the shoreline. Go later in the day for dramatic light over the ocean, and be ready for wind and changing footing as you wander.
