Classic Millerton Lake climb
Pincushion Peak via San Joaquin River Trail
Sky Harbor At Millerton • Steep Summit Training Climb • Best For Strong Hikers And Views
A short but lung-busting climb above Millerton Lake that rewards you with sweeping foothill and lake vistas.
Starting from the Sky Harbor area, the San Joaquin River Trail wastes no time gaining elevation as it switchbacks up the exposed hillside to Pincushion's rocky summit. The grade makes it a favorite training hike for local trail runners and backpackers. Aim for sunrise or sunset to beat the heat and catch the lake glowing below, and be ready for a sustained grind on the way up.

Wildflower-season favorite
McKenzie Table Mountain Preserve
Table Mountain Plateau • Seasonal Wildflower Mesa Walk • Top Spring Wildflower Hike
A broad basalt mesa above Millerton Lake known for its seasonal wildflower carpets and easy roaming.
When the preserve opens in spring, locals flock here for wide-open walking across the flat top of Table Mountain. The hiking is more about wandering than following a single trail, with views stretching over Millerton Lake and down into the San Joaquin River canyon. Go after a wet winter for the best bloom, and expect uneven, sometimes muddy ground instead of a manicured path.

Easygoing shoreline choice
Millerton Lake Shoreline Trails
Millerton Lake State Park • Rolling Lakeside Paths • Relaxed Family-Friendly Option
Gentle ups and downs along Millerton's shoreline with big-sky views and plenty of chances to detour down to the water.
On the north and west sides of Millerton Lake, a web of unofficial and park-maintained paths lets you piece together hikes as short or long as you like. The terrain is classic foothills—golden grass in summer, green in winter—with open views, scattered oaks, and frequent birdlife. It is exposed, so bring sun protection, but the easy grades and close-to-the-road access make this a solid pick for casual walkers and families.

Scenic waterfall side trip
Stevenson Falls Trail
Near Shaver Lake • Forest Road-To-Falls Outing • Cooler Summer Escape Into The Pines
A forested hike or road walk along Stevenson Creek to a tall Sierra cascade, popular as a half-day escape from the heat below.
Driving up toward Shaver Lake trades the oak foothills for tall pines and cooler air, and Stevenson Falls is an accessible way to sample that change. Depending on road conditions and your vehicle, you can either drive closer to the falls or park back and hike the forest road, listening to the creek build as you go. The waterfall is most impressive in late spring and early summer, when snowmelt sends a white curtain spilling down the granite wall.
