Iconic canyon adventure
Bridge to Nowhere via East Fork Trail
East Fork, North Of Azusa • All-Day River Canyon Hike • Bucket-List Adventure
A long, boulder-hopping river hike to an isolated arch bridge deep in the San Gabriels.
Starting from the East Fork trailhead off Highway 39, this route winds upstream past swimming holes and frequent river crossings before topping out at the historic Bridge to Nowhere. Expect to get your feet wet, navigate uneven rock, and share the canyon with bungee jumpers on weekends. Go early on hot days, bring more water than you think you need, and pack sandals or shoes that can handle repeated creek crossings.

Big-mountain workout
Iron Mountain Trail via Heaton Flats
Heaton Flats Trailhead, Angeles National Forest • Steep Summit Approach • Best For Seasoned Climbers
A relentless, sun-exposed climb toward Iron Mountain with serious elevation gain and huge canyon views.
From the same East Fork corridor, the Heaton Flats trail wastes no time in heading uphill toward Iron Mountain, a notoriously tough peak that draws experienced hikers. Even if you turn around before the true summit, you’ll earn sweeping views over the San Gabriel River and the high ridges above Azusa. Start at dawn, treat this like a true alpine day, and skip it in extreme heat or if you’re new to steep, loose terrain.

Cooler high-country escape
Windy Gap Trail from Crystal Lake
Crystal Lake Recreation Area • High-Country Forest Trail • Cooler Summer Escape
A steady climb through pines and firs to a breezy saddle with classic San Gabriel ridgeline views.
A scenic drive up Highway 39 from Azusa brings you to the Crystal Lake basin, where the Windy Gap Trail heads into higher, cooler forest. The grade is steady but manageable, weaving past old burn zones, shaded stretches of conifers, and glimpses down into the canyon. At Windy Gap, pick a log, soak up the breeze, and watch the clouds slide over the backbone of the range before heading back the way you came.

Low-stress ridge walk
Shoemaker Canyon Road (Road to Nowhere)
San Gabriel Canyon, Highway 39 • Historic Road Walk • Laid-Back Evening Outing
An easygoing walk on an abandoned mountain road with tunnels, big walls, and sunset-friendly views.
Tucked off Highway 39 above Azusa, Shoemaker Canyon follows an old road project that was abandoned mid-build, leaving behind carved cuts, tunnels, and airy drop-offs. The grade is gentle enough for casual hikers, but the setting still feels wild, with the San Gabriel River far below and rugged ridges all around. It’s a great choice for shorter days, mellow meetups, or golden-hour photo missions without a punishing climb.

Shady waterfall favorite
Monrovia Canyon Falls Trail
Monrovia Canyon Park • Shaded Waterfall Trail • Family-Friendly Starter Hike
A short, mostly shaded walk along a creek to a small but satisfying foothill waterfall.
A quick drive west from Azusa, Monrovia Canyon offers a softer side of the San Gabriels, with maintained paths and plenty of trees overhead. The waterfall trail follows the creek up a gentle canyon, crossing rustic bridges and passing picnic spots before ending at a rock amphitheater and a photogenic falls. Parking reservations and small fees may apply on busy weekends, so it’s worth checking ahead and arriving early for easier access.
