01
Best overall pick
Bear Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve
Bear Creek Road Corridor • Cool, Forested Redwood Preserve • Best Overall Introduction To The Area
A network of shaded trails right off Bear Creek Road, with redwoods, small ponds, and enough mileage for short or longer loops.
If you only have time for one hike near Bear Creek, make it here: the Alma and Redwood Springs loops offer classic redwood scenery with moderate climbs and quiet corners. Trails are well signed, but a few junctions can feel subtle, so take a moment to confirm turns at major intersections. Parking fills on weekends, so early mornings or late afternoons are your best bet for a relaxed start.
02
Closest cardio climb
Lexington Reservoir County Park
Below Bear Creek Road At Lexington Reservoir • Sunny Foothill Park With Reservoir Views • Best Close-To-Town Workout Loop
Steep, open hillsides rise above the water, giving you quick elevation gain and broad views without a long drive.
Trails like Priest Rock and Limekiln climb straight out of the reservoir basin, making this a go-to for locals who want a serious workout in a short window. Expect exposed stretches and loose footing in places, so bring water and shoes with good traction. It can be busy near trailheads, but you usually lose the crowds once you settle into the climbs.
03
Best for views and rock scrambling
Castle Rock State Park
Skyline Boulevard Above Bear Creek • Rugged Sandstone And Ridge-Top Park • Best For Big Views And Rock Features
A classic Santa Cruz Mountains park with sculpted sandstone outcrops, sweeping vistas, and access to longer ridge hikes.
From the main entrance, short routes to Castle Rock and Goat Rock deliver fast payoffs with photo-worthy viewpoints and interesting rock formations. Longer loops on the Saratoga Gap or Ridge trails give you a more immersive day, mixing forested sections with exposed ridge walking. Expect cooler temps and more wind up here compared with Bear Creek itself, so pack an extra layer even on sunny days.
04
Shadiest summer option
Sanborn County Park
Saratoga-Side Canyon Near Bear Creek • Steep, Shaded Redwood Canyon Park • Best For Cool, Creekside Climbs
Narrow canyon trails wind through redwoods and firs, offering some of the coolest, most sheltered hiking close to Bear Creek.
Sanborn’s lower trails follow the creek in deep shade before switching onto steeper slopes that climb toward the Skyline ridge. It is a good choice on hot days or when nearby ridges feel too exposed, and the grades give you a solid workout without long mileage. The canyon can feel enclosed and damp in winter, so expect slick roots and pack a light layer even when the valley is warm.
05
Big summit day
Mount Umunhum, Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve
High Ridge Southeast Of Bear Creek • Exposed High-Elevation Ridge And Summit Area • Best For All-Day Challenge And Summit Feel
A long, steady climb or drive-accessed short walk to one of the South Bay’s most distinctive summits, with far-reaching views on clear days.
Starting from lower trailheads, the hike up toward Mount Umunhum is a sustained ascent that rewards you with a true ‘top of the range’ perspective over the valley and out toward the ocean. Even if you park near the top, short walks around the summit area deliver a big-mountain feel compared with the lower Bear Creek hills. The exposure means wind and sun are factors, so plan for changing conditions and bring more water than you think you need.
