01
Best overall pick
Tilden Regional Park
Berkeley Hills Above North Berkeley • Classic East Bay Ridge-And-Canyon Park • Best All-Around Hiking Choice
Tilden offers everything from lakeside strolls to big-view ridge walks within a quick drive of central Berkeley.
Start with an easy loop around Lake Anza or head up toward Wildcat Peak and the Nimitz Way for wide open views of the bay and bridges. The trail network connects mellow fire roads with steeper singletrack, so you can dial the difficulty up or down. Weekends get busy at popular lots, so go early or use the less obvious trailheads along Wildcat Canyon and South Park Drive.
02
Best sunrise climb
Claremont Canyon Regional Preserve
Above The Claremont And Elmwood Neighborhoods • Steep Hillside Preserve With Sweeping Bay Views • Quick But Demanding Workout
Short, steep trails rocket from neighborhood streets to a ridgeline with some of the most dramatic views in the Berkeley Hills.
The Stonewall-Panoramic and Claremont Canyon trails waste no time gaining elevation, making this a favorite pre-work climb for locals. From the top, you get a full sweep of the skyline from Oakland up past the Golden Gate, especially striking at sunrise or on clear winter days. There is little shade and minimal parking at the base, so bring water and be patient with the narrow hillside streets.
03
Best campus-adjacent escape
Strawberry Canyon Fire Trail
Hills Directly Behind Uc Berkeley Campus • Graded Fire Road Along A Forested Canyon Rim • Convenient In-Town Hike
This campus-adjacent fire trail offers a steady climb, filtered bay views, and a quick dose of nature right after class or work.
Starting near Memorial Stadium, the broad fire road winds above Strawberry Canyon with views over the campus, the Campanile, and the central bay on clear sections. The grade is consistent but manageable, making it popular with runners and walkers who want a cardio climb without technical footing. Expect company at peak hours and limited parking on game days or during big campus events.
04
Best rolling hill vistas
Wildcat Canyon Regional Park
Ridges Above Kensington And El Cerrito • Wide-Open Grasslands And Long Ridge Walks • Best For Longer Rambles
Wildcat’s broad ridges and old ranch roads serve up big-sky views, long loops, and a more open, rural feel just north of Berkeley.
From trailheads near the Kensington border, you can climb quickly onto the San Pablo Ridge and follow mellow dirt roads with sweeping views toward Mount Tam, the bridges, and the Marin Headlands. The terrain undulates gently but can add up over a few hours, making it great training ground for longer hikes. Much of the park is exposed and can be windy, so bring layers and sun protection, and be prepared to encounter grazing cattle on some routes.
05
Best redwood forest escape
Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park
Oakland Hills Southeast Of Berkeley • Shady Redwood Canyon Network • Coolest Choice On Hot Days
A short drive over the hills drops you into a quiet redwood canyon with cool air, soft trails, and classic East Bay forest ambience.
From the Canyon Meadow or Skyline-side trailheads, you can mix wide fire roads with narrower paths like the Stream and French trails beneath towering redwoods. The grade ranges from nearly flat creekside walks to stout climbs back up to the ridge, so it works for both casual hikers and those looking for a leg burner. It stays several degrees cooler here than in Berkeley on hot afternoons, but parking lots can fill quickly on summer weekends.
