Classic desert oasis hike
Borrego Palm Canyon Nature Trail
Near Visitor Center • Desert Oasis Canyon Hike • Best First-Time Hike
A signature Borrego Springs hike that follows a rocky wash into a shady California fan palm oasis with reliable desert scenery.
Starting near the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Visitor Center, this well-loved trail climbs gently up a broad canyon toward a natural palm grove and seasonal stream. Expect rocky footing, sun exposure, and plenty of chances to spot bighorn sheep or blooming brittlebush in season. Go early in the day for cooler temperatures and easier parking, especially on winter weekends.

Most photogenic
The Slot
East Of Borrego Springs • Narrow Slot Canyon Adventure • Best For Wow-Factor Photos
A short but unforgettable loop through a twisting slot canyon carved deep into soft desert sediments.
Reached by a graded dirt road off Borrego Springs Road, The Slot drops quickly into a sinuous, shoulder-wide canyon with towering, sculpted walls. The hike is relatively short, but you’ll move slowly as you duck under boulders, squeeze through tight turns, and stop for photos. It’s best in cool weather and not recommended during storms or if you’re uncomfortable with confined spaces.
03
Challenging canyon climb
Hellhole Canyon Trail
South Of Borrego Springs • Strenuous Wildflower Canyon Hike • Best For Cool-Season Mornings
A demanding out-and-back up a broad, rocky canyon that rewards effort with big views and, in good years, wildflowers and seasonal waterfalls.
The trail begins just off Montezuma Valley Road and heads straight into open desert before narrowing into a rocky canyon framed by steep ridges. In wet winters, small cascades and lush pockets of vegetation appear near Maidenhair Falls, turning the upper canyon into a surprising green refuge. This route is fully exposed and can be brutally hot, so start at sunrise, carry plenty of water, and be ready for uneven, boulder-strewn footing.
04
Rugged desert history hike
Calcite Mine Trail
Northeast Of Borrego Springs • Rugged Mine Road And Viewpoint Route • Best For Adventurous Hikers
A rough old road and use paths that climb to an abandoned WWII-era calcite mining area with wide-open desert views.
Accessed from Highway 78, this hike follows an old jeep road up into badlands cut by small side canyons and colorful eroded hills. The remnants of the calcite mine are subtle, but the real payoff is the feeling of being high above the desert with sweeping views toward the Salton Sea. The route is exposed, can be windy, and involves some steep, loose sections, making it a better choice for confident hikers with good footwear.
05
Quiet scenic ramble
Glorietta Canyon
West Of Borrego Springs • Scenic Boulder-Filled Washes • Best For A Mellow Explore
A low-key network of sandy washes and granite outcrops where you can wander at your own pace among classic desert scenery.
Just a short drive from town off Yaqui Pass Road, Glorietta Canyon offers informal routes rather than a single signed trail, letting you choose anything from a short stroll to a half-day outing. You’ll walk through sandy washes, weave around rounded boulders, and pass stands of barrel cactus and agave backed by rugged hills. It’s a great option when popular trails feel crowded, but carry a map or GPS and pay attention to landmarks, as the washes can look similar on the way back.
