01
Best first-timer summit
Cowles Mountain
Mission Trails Regional Park • Classic City-Side Summit Hike • Iconic Introductory Peak
A short, steady climb to one of San Diego’s most famous summits with big views and a friendly local vibe.
Cowles is often the first real hike locals try, and for good reason: the main trail is straightforward, well signed, and rewards you quickly with sweeping views over East County and downtown. Go early or on a weekday if you want a quieter experience, and bring sun protection—shade is limited. It is ideal when you want a solid workout and a sense of accomplishment without committing your whole day.
02
Most demanding challenge
El Cajon Mountain Trail
El Monte Valley • Rugged Out-And-Back Mountain Trek • Challenging Local Icon
A long, relentless rollercoaster of a trail that delivers big elevation gain and wide-open backcountry views.
Known to locals simply as El Cap, this route is a serious undertaking with constant ups and downs even before the final summit push. The payoff is a remote-feeling ridgeline and dramatic granite formations that feel a world away from suburban El Cajon. Start at dawn in cooler months, pack extra water and snacks, and treat this as a full-day objective rather than a casual stroll.
03
Best for bold viewpoints
Mount Woodson via Highway 67
Highway 67 Corridor • Steep Roadside Peak Trail • Best For Seasoned Hikers
A sustained climb straight up from the highway to a rocky summit dotted with boulders and panoramic overlooks.
The Highway 67 approach to Mount Woodson gains elevation quickly, giving you an efficient but demanding workout close to Bostonia. The trail is exposed and rocky, but the views across Poway, Ramona, and the inland mountains keep getting better the higher you go. Plan this one for a cool morning, watch for traffic when parking along the highway, and be ready for a steady grind on the way up and down.
04
Best quick workout
Kwaay Paay Peak Trail
Tierrasanta Side Of Mission Trails • Short, Steep Peak Climb • Quick Cardio Hill
A brisk, stair-step style climb that packs real elevation into a compact route with rewarding summit views.
Kwaay Paay is perfect when you want something tougher than a neighborhood walk but do not have time for an all-day outing. The trail shoots up the ridge with a mix of rock steps and dirt, giving your legs and lungs a quick wake-up call. From the top you can look back toward Bostonia, over the San Diego River valley, and out toward the rest of Mission Trails without spending half your day on the trail.
05
Best mellow countryside roam
Hollenbeck Canyon Loop
Jamul Backcountry • Rolling Canyon And Ranchland Loop • Scenic Off-The-Beaten-Path Option
A gentler ramble through open fields, oak-lined creek beds, and low hills that feels far from town.
South of Bostonia, Hollenbeck Canyon offers a change of pace from the steeper peak trails, with broad paths that wind through old ranchland and seasonal creek crossings. In winter and spring the grass turns green and wildflowers dot the hillsides, making it a favorite for quieter weekend walks. Keep an eye out for equestrians, bring plenty of water, and expect sun exposure as you explore the wider network of loops.
