01
Best overall pick
Bucks Summit–Spanish Peak–Bucks Lake Loop
Bucks Lake Wilderness Core • Classic Sierra Backpacking Loop • Big-Mile Adventure
A long, rewarding loop that links Bucks Lake’s shoreline with the Pacific Crest Trail and a climb to Spanish Peak’s sweeping summit.
This 16-plus-mile circuit is the hike locals point to when you ask for the full Bucks Lake experience. The route traces the lake, climbs through shaded forest to meet the PCT, then tops out on Spanish Peak with views across the Plumas backcountry and toward Mount Lassen. Strong hikers can tackle it as a big day, but it really shines as an overnight with a lakeside camp and a quiet, starry finish.
02
Best short alpine escape
Gold Lake Trail via Silver Lake
Silver Lake Side Of Bucks Lake Wilderness • Family-Friendly Alpine Lakes Trail • Best For Casual Hikers
A modest climb from the Silver Lake area to a tucked-away alpine bowl where Gold Lake mirrors granite walls and conifers.
Starting near Silver Lake, this trail winds gently through mixed forest before opening into a rocky basin studded with Gold Lake’s clear water. The distance is short enough for newer hikers but still feels wild, with granite slabs, shoreline picnic spots, and a few easy places to dip your feet. Go early or on a weekday if you want the basin mostly to yourself.
03
Best lakeside ramble
Mill Creek Trail
Bucks Lake North Shore • Shaded Lakeshore Path • Relaxed Half-Day Outing
A mellow shoreline trail that traces coves and inlets along Bucks Lake, with constant water views and easy access to the beach.
Mill Creek is the go-to hike when you want to stretch your legs without a big climb. The path rolls gently through pines and firs, slipping in and out of views of Bucks Lake and the little bays where anglers and paddleboarders congregate. It is an easy choice for mixed groups, with plenty of spots to pause for photos, snack breaks, or a quick swim before heading back to the trailhead.
04
Best for summit views
Spanish Peak via Pacific Crest Trail
Bucks Summit Ridge • Scenic Summit Day Hike • Best Mid-Length Climb
A steady ascent from the Pacific Crest Trail to a prominent summit overlooking Bucks Lake and the wider northern Sierra.
This route uses a particularly photogenic stretch of the PCT to gain Spanish Peak without committing to the full Bucks Lake loop. You’ll climb through forest and open ridges, with views widening as you approach the rocky top. On clear days, the panorama takes in Bucks Lake below, layered ridgelines in every direction, and distant volcanic peaks to the north.
05
Best challenge hike
Grassy Lakes via Pacific Crest Trail
Upper Grassy Lakes Basin • Remote Backcountry Route • Best For Experienced Hikers
A longer, more committing out-and-back that follows the PCT into quiet high country dotted with small lakes and meadows.
If you want to leave the crowds behind, the trek to Grassy Lakes delivers a full day of solitude and classic wilderness scenery. The trail rolls along ridges and saddles before dropping into a higher basin where small lakes, marshy edges, and open meadows feel far from the road. Carry plenty of water, be ready for changing weather, and treat this as a true backcountry outing rather than a casual stroll from the campground.
