Best taste of the PCT
Pacific Crest Trail: Snow Creek to Interstate 10
North Of Cabazon Along The Pct Corridor • Iconic Desert Ridgeline Trail • Big-View Day Hike
A sun‑drenched stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail that drops toward Interstate 10 with wide views of San Jacinto and the San Gorgonio Pass wind farms.
This segment is one of the easiest ways from Cabazon to experience the feel of the PCT without committing to an overnight. Expect exposed tread, long views, and a steady grade rather than steep scrambling. Start early for cooler temperatures, bring plenty of water, and be ready for wind as you approach the pass.
02
Best mellow canyon wander
Whitewater Preserve Canyon View Loop
Whitewater Preserve North Of I-10 • River-Carved Desert Canyon Walk • Relaxed Half-Day Wander
A gentle loop along the Whitewater River and up low hills for sweeping views back over the canyon and surrounding desert.
Just a short drive east from Cabazon, Whitewater Preserve feels surprisingly lush thanks to its year‑round stream and cottonwood trees. The Canyon View Loop mixes riverside strolling with a short climb to a ridge that overlooks the whole valley. It is a good choice for mixed groups, with plenty of spots to turn around or linger by the water.
03
Best big-mountain lookout
San Gorgonio Overlook via Pacific Crest Trail
Hills Above San Gorgonio Pass • High-Desert Ridge Hike Into The Foothills • Big-View Workout
A moderately strenuous outing on the PCT to a broad overlook facing the snowy bulk of Mount San Gorgonio and the surrounding ranges.
This route uses a quieter access point to the PCT, trading crowds for long, open views and a gradual climb. As you gain the ridge, the wind farms and freeway slip below and the high country of San Gorgonio dominates the skyline. It is best on clear days after a storm, when the air is sharp and the mountains pop against the desert floor.
04
Best easy escape into the pines
Lake Fulmor Loop Trail
Mountain Road Toward Idyllwild • Cozy Pine-Forest Lakeside Loop • Family-Friendly Stroll
A short, mostly level loop circling a small mountain lake, trading desert heat for cool shade and reflections of pines in the water.
Head up Highway 243 from the valley and the landscape quickly flips from scrub to tall pines, with Lake Fulmor tucked right beside the road. The loop trail is more of a leisurely walk than a hike, with benches and fishing spots that make it easy to linger. It is a great option for families, visitors adjusting to elevation, or anyone who wants mountain air without a long trek.
05
Best short waterfall hike
Tahquitz Canyon Trail
Near Downtown Palm Springs • Seasonal Waterfall Canyon Hike • Quick Scenic Escape
A well-built trail climbing a rocky canyon to a seasonal waterfall, blending cultural history, rock formations, and classic desert scenery.
Though it requires a bit more driving from Cabazon, Tahquitz Canyon is a reliable crowd‑pleaser with a clear path, stone steps, and interpretive signs. The payoff waterfall is especially satisfying in cooler months and after winter or spring storms, when flow is strongest. Plan for sun exposure, an entry fee, and limited shade, but also for some of the most photogenic canyon walls in the region.
