Rugged escape pick
Las Trampas Regional Wilderness
West Of Camino Tassajara In Bollinger Canyon • Steep Wilderness Park With Rugged Ridgelines • Best Workout Hike
Las Trampas trades smooth paths for steep climbs and rocky ridges, rewarding the effort with some of the strongest views in the area.
Starting from the Bollinger Canyon or Del Amigo trailheads, trails like Rocky Ridge and Las Trampas Ridge waste no time heading uphill. The grades are stout and the footing can be rutted, but once on the ridgeline you get sweeping panoramas over the San Ramon Valley, Mount Diablo, and, on clear days, all the way toward the Bay. This is the spot when you want your legs to burn a bit and do not mind coming back dusty and tired.

Iconic summit day
Mount Diablo State Park
Northeast Of Camino Tassajara Near Clayton • Classic Bay Area State Park With Summit Routes • Must-Do Regional Landmark
Mount Diablo turns a local hike into a big-mountain outing, with routes that climb through multiple habitats to a 3,849-foot summit.
From trailheads like Mitchell Canyon or Juniper, you can piece together half-day to full-day hikes that offer everything from shaded canyons to sunbaked ridges. The summit area has an observation deck and exhibits, but the real payoff is the 360-degree view over the Delta, Bay, and surrounding ranges. It is a bit farther from Camino Tassajara than the neighborhood open spaces, yet it is the hike that anchors the whole region and is worth planning a day around.
