01
Most iconic start
Pacific Crest Trail Southern Terminus
Campo • Scenic Long-Distance Trail Segment • Iconic Border-To-Canada Kickoff
Walk a legendary stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail right from the border outside Campo.
This is where the Pacific Crest Trail officially begins, with a monument, wide-open views, and a feeling of big-distance adventure even on a short outing. You can follow the well-signed path north over rolling hills and open ranchland, turning around whenever you are ready. Go early in warmer months, as shade is limited and the sun can be intense.
02
Best mellow variety
Lake Morena County Park
Lake Morena • Lakeside County Park Trail Network • Best For Relaxed Half-Day Walks
Easy-to-moderate trails loop around Lake Morena, mixing shoreline views with classic backcountry scenery.
Lake Morena is a favorite Campo-area escape thanks to its mix of wide paths, singletrack, and quiet coves. You can do a short lakeside stroll, a longer loop that dips in and out of oak woodland, or connect with the Pacific Crest Trail for more mileage. Picnic tables and campgrounds make it an easy spot to turn a hike into a full day outside.
03
Best quick summit
Morena Butte Trail
Near Lake Morena Village • Rocky Summit Hike With Lake And Desert Views • Short But Steep Challenge
Climb to a rocky high point above Lake Morena for big panoramas without an all-day commitment.
Starting near the lake, this trail works steadily uphill to a boulder-topped summit overlooking the reservoir and out toward the drier country to the east. The route feels wild and exposed, with sections of granite and low chaparral that glow at sunset. It is a rewarding choice when you want a solid workout and views but do not have time for a longer mountain mission.
04
Best mountain views
Cuyamaca Peak via Azalea Glen Loop
Cuyamaca Rancho State Park • High-Country Summit Loop • Cool-Weather Mountain Escape
A varied loop climbs through forest and granite to one of San Diego County’s highest summits.
A bit of a drive from Campo, Cuyamaca Peak rewards the effort with sweeping views over the backcountry, the coast, and the Anza-Borrego desert. The Azalea Glen approach offers a quieter, more scenic ascent through meadows, oaks, and pines before joining the main fire road near the top. On clear days the summit feels like a lookout over most of Southern California.
05
Best full-day adventure
Noble Canyon Trail
Laguna Mountains Above Pine Valley • Forest Canyon Out-And-Back • Best All-Day Adventure
A long, rolling trail follows Noble Canyon through pines, oaks, and seasonal creek crossings in the Laguna Mountains.
Noble Canyon is a classic San Diego backcountry hike, offering a cooler, higher-elevation feel compared with the chaparral around Campo. Expect a mix of shaded forest, open slopes, and rocky sections with big views toward the desert. Many hikers turn around at a scenic midpoint, but strong hikers can make a full day of it by exploring deeper into the canyon.
