01
Best sunrise viewpoint
Mount Helix Park
Casa De Oro–Mount Helix • Short Neighborhood Summit Walk • Iconic Close-To-Home Climb
A quick but steep walk to a historic hilltop park with sweeping views over East County and downtown San Diego on clear days.
If you want a hike you can squeeze in before work, Mount Helix is the obvious choice. Park along the lower roads and walk up the winding pavement and stairways to the amphitheater and cross at the top, where the 360-degree views make the short climb worth it. It’s more of a hill walk than a backcountry trek, but the mix of local history, landscaping, and big-sky vistas makes this a classic neighborhood outing.
02
Most popular local summit
Cowles Mountain
Mission Trails Regional Park • Busy Desert-Chaparral Summit Trail • Crowd-Pleasing Peak Hike
A well-traveled, rocky trail to the highest point in the City of San Diego, with wide-open views and a steady workout.
Cowles is the go-to training hike for many East County residents, thanks to its straightforward route and consistent elevation gain. Expect a mix of runners, families, and dog walkers on the main trail, plus some rockier side routes if you want a little more challenge. Go early or late for cooler temperatures and easier parking, and bring water—there’s almost no shade on the way up.
03
Best river corridor walk
Sweetwater River Trail (San Diego National Wildlife Refuge)
Rancho San Diego • Riparian Canyon And Foothills Trail • Relaxed Nature Escape
A gently rolling path that winds along the Sweetwater River corridor, offering quieter scenery close to town and good birdwatching.
Just a short drive from Casa de Oro–Mount Helix, the Sweetwater River Trail feels surprisingly removed from busy streets. The route travels through open grasslands and low foothills with views toward surrounding peaks, and seasonal water in the riverbed adds extra interest after wet winters. It’s a solid choice when you want a more mellow outing than the steeper summit climbs but still crave that open-space feel.
04
Best quick leg burner
Dictionary Hill Open Space Preserve
Spring Valley • Steep Urban-Edge Open Space • After-Work Workout Hike
A short, steep network of dirt paths climbing from neighborhood streets to a rocky hilltop with big views over Spring Valley and beyond.
Dictionary Hill is a favorite for locals who want a hard climb without a long drive. Trails shoot straight up the slope in places, so you’ll feel the burn quickly, but the payoff is a surprisingly expansive panorama of reservoirs, neighborhoods, and distant peaks. The terrain is rougher and more informal than in the regional parks, so wear sturdy shoes and be ready for loose rock on the descents.
05
Best longer loop
South Fortuna Mountain Loop
Mission Trails Regional Park • Rugged Canyon-And-Ridge Circuit • Weekend Adventure Pick
A more demanding circuit that combines river-bottom paths, steep stair-step climbs, and a rocky summit with far-reaching views.
For a hike that feels like a mini backcountry adventure, the South Fortuna loop delivers a mix of terrain in a single outing. You’ll start along the San Diego River before tackling the famous “stairs” section up the ridge, where stone steps lead to high views across Mission Trails and toward East County. It’s exposed and can get hot, so this one is best tackled in the cooler hours with plenty of water and time to enjoy the summit.
