Best coastal cliff walk
Caspar Headlands Trail
Caspar Coastline • Windy Coastal Bluff Trail • Classic Mendocino Coast Experience
A short, dramatic bluff-top walk with nonstop ocean views and crashing surf right on the edge of Caspar.
This unofficial-feeling network of paths traces the low headlands west of town, with views straight down to rock arches, tidepools, and migrating whales in season. It is mostly flat but fully exposed, so bring layers and be ready for wind and fog. Locals often park near Caspar Beach and wander the bluffs at golden hour when the light hits the sea stacks just right.
02
Best quiet forest loop
Caspar Uplands Trail
Inland Caspar • Shaded Redwood And Spruce Forest Trail • Low-Key Local Favorite
A peaceful loop through second-growth redwoods and rare Sitka spruce that feels far more remote than its location suggests.
Just uphill from the village, this Mendocino Land Trust trail follows Doyle Creek before climbing into a cool, mossy forest. The grades are gentle enough for casual hikers, with enough climbing to feel like a real leg stretch. It is a good choice on foggy or windy days when the bluffs are blustery, and it stays pleasingly uncrowded even on summer weekends.
03
Best waterfall hike
Russian Gulch Waterfall Loop
Between Caspar And Mendocino • Redwood Canyon And Waterfall Trail • Scenic Half-Day Outing
A classic loop up Russian Gulch, combining a ferny creek canyon, towering redwoods, and a photogenic waterfall.
Starting near the bottom of the gulch, the trail follows the creek on soft, often muddy tread beneath a canopy of redwoods and big-leaf maples. The waterfall at the head of the canyon is modest in height but framed by ferns and mossy rock, especially pretty in winter and spring. Expect a moderate outing with roots, bridges, and some short climbs, best tackled with sturdy shoes and plenty of time to linger along the creek.
04
Best fern-filled canyon
Fern Canyon Trail, Van Damme State Park
South Of Caspar Near Little River • Creekside Fern Canyon Hike • Shaded Escape On Warm Days
A gentle but steadily climbing walk up Little River’s fern-lined canyon, perfect for a cool, green contrast to the open coast.
From the redwood-shaded campground, the trail threads along Little River, passing footbridges, side creeks, and slopes carpeted in sword fern and redwood sorrel. The farther you go, the quieter it becomes, with only creek noise and the occasional raven for company. It is an easy route to customize, as you can turn around at any bridge or push higher for a longer workout without losing the lush canyon feel.
05
Best geology and views combo
Ecological Staircase Trail, Jug Handle State Natural Reserve
North Of Caspar Near Jug Handle • Cliff-And-Terrace Interpretive Hike • Most Unique Landscape
A one-of-a-kind hike that climbs from wave-sprayed bluffs up a series of ancient marine terraces into a pygmy forest.
The trail begins on a bluff above Jug Handle Beach with sweeping views of the surf, then steps inland across successively older terraces, each with its own soil and plant community. Interpretive signs explain how the coastline rose over millennia, turning sea floor into forest. It is a moderate outing with a bit of elevation but no technical sections, and it rewards curious hikers who like to mix natural history with their views.
