Best coastal route
Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail
Castroville Shoreline • Paved Coastal Trail • Easiest Intro Hike
A flat, breezy path that lets you walk right out of Castroville toward the bay with nonstop ocean atmosphere.
This rail-trail style path is the go-to option when you want movement and fresh air more than a big workout. Start near Castroville and follow the route toward Marina or Monterey for long, mostly level miles with wide ocean views and plenty of people-watching. It’s ideal for an easy-paced walk, stroller-friendly outing, or a shakeout stroll after a drive down Highway 1.
02
Best for wildlife
Elkhorn Slough Reserve
Moss Landing • Wetlands Nature Preserve • Birdwatching Gem
A mellow network of dirt trails winding above tidal wetlands where otters, shorebirds, and harbor seals steal the show.
Just a short drive north of Castroville, Elkhorn Slough trades big vistas for quiet, close-up nature. The rolling paths are short but scenic, looping past oak-covered knolls and down toward lookouts over glassy channels. Bring binoculars and plan to linger at overlooks—this is the spot when you’d rather count egrets than calories burned.
03
Best ocean views
Fort Ord Dunes State Park
Marina Coast • Dune And Beach Loop Network • Best For Ocean Sunsets
Short sandy and bluff-top trails with big-sky views of Monterey Bay and easy access down to a wide, uncrowded beach.
Head south toward Marina and you can be walking the dunes in under 20 minutes from Castroville. The main loop follows an old road and sandy paths along the bluff, with side options that drop you to the shoreline for barefoot beach walking. Go in the late afternoon for cooler temps and a sunset that makes the modest hills feel more than worth it.

Best quick workout
Manzanita County Park
Prunedale Hills • Oak-Woodland Park With Shared-Use Trails • Quick After-Work Workout
A compact web of singletrack weaving through oaks and chaparral, with enough ups and downs to feel like real hiking close to town.
Tucked into the low hills above Prunedale, Manzanita is where locals go when they want dirt underfoot without committing to a long drive. The trails are shared with mountain bikers, but hikers will find plenty of quieter corners and steady little climbs that add up. It’s a great choice for an after-work loop or for testing new boots on real terrain before a bigger weekend trip.
05
Best for a challenge
Toro County Park
Salinas Foothills • Backcountry-Style County Park • Challenging Half-Day Climb
Longer, steeper routes that climb into the oak-studded hills with sweeping views back over the Salinas Valley and toward the bay.
When you’ve outgrown flat paths and want a real workout, Toro is the logical step up from Castroville. Trails here can be hot and hilly, but the payoff comes in big panoramas, spring wildflowers, and the feel of being further from town than you really are. Start early, carry plenty of water, and treat it as a half-day outing rather than a casual stroll.
