Best overall pick
Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve
Near Guerneville • Cathedral Redwood Forest Hike • Iconic Redwood Experience
A network of mellow trails winds through soaring old-growth redwoods just downriver from Cazadero.
If you only have time for one hike while staying in Cazadero, Armstrong Redwoods is the easy, can’t-miss choice. Flat paths like the Pioneer Nature Trail make it accessible for mixed-ability groups, while side routes climb to quiet viewpoints. Go early or late in the day for long shafts of light and a hushed, almost chapel-like feel among the biggest trees.
02
Best for hill workouts
Austin Creek State Recreation Area
Above Armstrong Woods • Sunny Ridge And Creek Trails • Best For Wide-Open Views
Steeper ranch roads and singletrack climb from redwood shade to open ridges high above Cazadero’s backcountry.
Austin Creek feels far wilder than its access through Armstrong Woods suggests, with big-sky meadows and long, leg-stretching climbs. The East Austin Creek and Gilliam Creek routes reward the effort with sweeping views and a good chance of spotting deer or wild turkeys. Pack sun protection and extra water—once you leave the canyon, there is very little shade.
03
Best coastal views
Kortum Trail
Sonoma Coast Near Shell Beach • Bluff-Top Ocean Path • Scenic Half-Day Coastal Escape
A gently rolling trail traces the edge of the coastal bluffs between Shell Beach and Wright’s Beach, with nonstop Pacific views.
When you need a break from the forest, head west from Cazadero and trade redwoods for surf and seabirds. The Kortum Trail is straightforward to follow and offers constant ocean drama without serious elevation. It’s ideal for a relaxed half-day outing, with plenty of spots to stop, watch the waves, and explore side paths down to pocket beaches when tides allow.

Best mixed landscapes
Pomo Canyon Trail and Red Hill
Russian River–To–Coast Corridor • Redwood, Grassland, And Ridge Loop • Best Forest-To-Coast Sampler
This climb from a redwood-lined creek up to open ridges and the Red Hill overlook packs a lot of scenery into a single hike.
Pomo Canyon is a favorite for hikers who like a bit of effort with their views. The trail starts in cool, damp redwoods before switchbacking into golden hillsides dotted with oaks, finally reaching a high perch with glimpses of the ocean and the lower Russian River. It’s a great choice when you want a sense of how the landscape shifts between Cazadero’s forests and the coast in just a few miles.

Best low-key stroll
Old Cazadero Road
Along The Russian River Near Guerneville • Quiet Riverside Road Walk • Relaxed Local Favorite
An old road alignment above the Russian River offers a mellow, mostly shaded walk with a local, lived-in feel.
Old Cazadero Road is less about peak-bagging and more about stretching your legs between redwood cabins and river overlooks. The grade is gentle and the setting feels tucked away, making it a nice option for a recovery day or a walk with conversation. Time it for late afternoon and you’ll often catch soft light filtering through the trees onto the river below.
