Best nearby summit feel
Mount Elizabeth to Cedar Ridge Trail
East Of Cedar Ridge • Forest Ridge Out-And-Back • Closest Summit Hike
A wooded ridge walk that gives Cedar Ridge locals a true “mountain hike” without driving deep into the high country.
Beginning from the Mount Elizabeth side, this route climbs steadily through mixed conifer forest with periodic openings toward the foothills and Sonora below. The grade is moderate but sustained, making it a solid choice when you want more than a stroll yet still finish before lunch. It feels pleasantly remote, but you are never so far from Cedar Ridge that the outing becomes an all-day production.

Best in-town escape
Dragoon Gulch Trail
Sonora • In-Town Oak Woodland Loop • Best Quick Workout
A compact network of trails rising above downtown Sonora with big views and a surprisingly wild feel.
Dragoon Gulch is where many locals squeeze in a hike before work or dinner, thanks to its easy access from town and tidy set of signed loops. The main ridge trail climbs quickly through blue oaks and manzanita to benches and viewpoints that look out over Sonora and the surrounding foothills. Shorter lower loops suit a casual stroll, while linking routes together can turn it into a respectable conditioning hike.

Best mellow forest walk
Lyons Dam Railroad Grade Trail
Lyons Reservoir • Shaded Creekside Path • Most Relaxed Outing
A mostly level path along an old railroad grade leading toward Lyons Reservoir, ideal for an unhurried half-day walk.
This route follows the gentle contours of a former logging railroad, so the grades are easy and footing is straightforward for most of the way. The trail stays cool under firs and cedars, with regular glimpses of the creek and occasional side spots that make good snack or picnic stops. It is a reliable pick when summer heat pushes you uphill from Cedar Ridge in search of shade and cooler air.
04
Best history-rich forest route
Sugar Pine Railway – Strawberry Branch
Strawberry • Historic Rail-Grade Forest Trail • Best For Easy Exploration
An old narrow-gauge railroad corridor turned hiking trail that threads quietly through high-country forest above the Stanislaus River.
Here the wide, gentle grade and subtle curves make it easy to imagine trains hauling logs down from the high country a century ago. Today it is a quiet, mostly flat path popular with walkers and casual bikers who want forest ambiance without serious climbing. The Strawberry area is a manageable drive from Cedar Ridge, but it feels like you have stepped into a different, cooler world of granite, pines, and river air.

Best all-around day out
Pinecrest Lake Loop Trail
Pinecrest Lake • Lakeside Family Loop • Best Family-Friendly Classic
A well-loved loop circling Pinecrest Lake, mixing beachy shoreline, forest stretches, and rockier sections with classic Sierra views.
The loop around Pinecrest Lake is a go-to recommendation for visitors because it offers so much variety without being overly long or technical. You can stroll past cabins and swim beaches on one side, then pick your way over more rugged granite and shaded coves on the far shore. Many Cedar Ridge residents bring visiting friends here, combining the hike with a picnic, swim, or post-trail ice cream stop in the marina area.
