01
Best easy local loop
Harbor Island Trail Loop
Channel Islands Harbor • Scenic Harbor And Beach Path • Easy Local Warm-Up
A flat, easy loop tracing the edges of Channel Islands Harbor with constant water views and plenty of people-watching.
If you want to stretch your legs without committing to a big hike, this paved path around Harbor Island is the go-to move from Channel Islands Beach. You get boats, seabirds, and a peek at local life as you circle the harbor, with options to dip down to the sand or tack on side streets for extra distance. Go early or near sunset for cooler temperatures and calmer traffic at the crossings.
02
Best coastal stroll
Ventura Beach Promenade to Emma Wood
Ventura Waterfront • Urban-Meets-Wild Coastal Walkway • Sunset Favorite
A relaxed out-and-back along the Ventura Promenade that quickly transitions from city beach to quieter sand and dunes near Emma Wood State Beach.
Start near the Ventura Pier and follow the wide oceanfront path north, then continue along the bike and walking route as it drifts into a more natural stretch of coast by Emma Wood. The walking is easy and mostly flat, but the scenery keeps changing—surf breaks, train tracks, driftwood, and big open views toward the Channel Islands. Pack a light layer; the breeze can pick up even on warm days, especially as you move away from town.
03
Best in-town workout hike
Arroyo Verde Park Trails
Ventura Foothills • Hilly City Park Trail Network • Close-To-Town Workout
A compact network of dirt trails and fire roads climbing quickly from lawn and picnic areas into rolling, view-filled hills above Ventura.
Arroyo Verde feels like a neighborhood park at the trailhead, but within a few minutes you’re grinding up switchbacks through coastal sage scrub. Short loops give you a brisk lunchtime climb, while linking ridges and canyon paths can turn it into a solid two-hour hike. On clear days, look back toward the harbor for a hazy outline of the islands and the Oxnard Plain stretching out below.
04
Best ocean-view climb
Ray Miller Trail, Point Mugu State Park
Santa Monica Mountains Coast • Oceanfront Canyon And Ridge Trail • Big-View Day Trip
A steady, switchbacking climb from the coastal highway into the Santa Monica Mountains with sweeping views up and down the Pacific coast.
About a half-hour drive down the coast, the Ray Miller Trail starts steps from Pacific Coast Highway and immediately begins a graceful climb above the shoreline. The grade is friendly but persistent, rewarding you with dramatic overlooks of Mugu Rock, wide beaches, and the curve of the coast toward Ventura. Turn around at a viewpoint for a moderate outing, or continue deeper into Point Mugu’s trail network if you want a longer, more rugged loop.
05
Best island adventure
Cavern Point and Scorpion Canyon Loop
Santa Cruz Island, Channel Islands National Park • Remote Island Ridge And Canyon Hike • Bucket-List Adventure
A classic Channel Islands hike that links cliff-top views, open ridges, and a quiet canyon on remote Santa Cruz Island.
After a short boat ride from the mainland, you land at Scorpion Anchorage and head uphill to Cavern Point, where steep cliffs drop to turquoise coves and the mainland looks impossibly distant. From there, a network of signed trails lets you continue along the coastal bluffs or loop back through Scorpion Canyon’s more sheltered terrain. It’s an all-day outing between boat schedules, so bring water, sun protection, and layers—there are no services once you step off the dock.
