01
Best overall pick
Big Bald Rock
Foothills Above Lake Oroville • Granite Dome Viewpoint Hike • Local Favorite
A short, punchy hike that pops you out on a massive granite dome with wide-open views over the Feather River country.
From the trailhead, a modest forest path quickly gives way to open slabs and the broad, rounded summit of Big Bald Rock. On clear days you can scan up and down the North Fork Feather River canyon and pick out Lake Oroville in the distance. Go early or near sunset for cooler temperatures and softer light; there’s almost no shade once you’re on the rock.
02
Best waterfall combo
Fern Falls & Coal Canyon Falls Trail
North Fork Feather River Corridor • Waterfall Canyon Hike • Best For Cool-Season Exploring
A rugged out-and-back that strings together ferny creekside walking with two impressive seasonal waterfalls.
This trail tracks along a wooded drainage before dropping toward the sculpted narrows and cascades of Coal Canyon. In a good water year, Fern Falls and Coal Canyon Falls make the effort feel like a mini waterfall tour, with shady stretches that stay pleasantly cool. Expect uneven footing, a few steep sections, and a wilder feel than the more manicured state-park paths.
03
Best wildflower meander
North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve
Plateau North Of Oroville • Open Meadow And Waterfall Ramble • Spring Showstopper
An open, choose-your-own-route plateau hike famous for spring wildflowers, basalt outcrops, and waterfall-filled gullies.
Instead of a single set trail, you wander across short-grass meadows, following use paths toward features like Phantom Falls, Ravine Falls, and basalt-lined creeks. In March and April, the carpets of lupine, poppies, and goldfields can be spectacular, with water spilling over the rim into hidden canyons. The terrain is mostly gentle but often muddy or slick, so bring sturdy shoes and be ready for some off-trail-style exploring.
04
Big day hike
Feather Falls National Recreation Trail
Plumas National Forest • Forest And Waterfall Trek • All-Day Adventure
A longer loop through mixed forest to a dramatic overlook of one of Northern California’s tallest waterfalls.
The trail winds through pine and oak, dipping in and out of side drainages before climbing to the platform above Feather Falls, where the drop and surrounding canyon feel genuinely grand. It’s a solid workout with sustained climbs and a mileage tally that makes it feel like a full outing rather than a quick leg-stretcher. Pack plenty of water, plan for several hours on the trail, and treat this as a proper backcountry-style excursion despite its popularity.
05
Easiest scenic loop
Point Defiance Loop Trail
Lake Oroville State Recreation Area • Lakeshore Loop Trail • Best For Families
A mellow loop with rolling terrain, lake views, and shady stretches that works well for mixed-ability groups.
Circling the Point Defiance peninsula, this trail gives you regular glimpses of coves, inlets, and houseboats moored along Lake Oroville without demanding big climbs. The path is well-established, making it a comfortable choice for kids, casual walkers, or anyone easing into the local terrain. It’s especially pleasant in the shoulder seasons, when temperatures are mild and the lake level adds a bit of drama to the shoreline.
