Best all-around creekside hike
Yahi Trail, Upper Bidwell Park
Upper Bidwell Park East Of Chico • Shaded Creekside Trail With Lava Rock Outcrops • Best All-Around Local Hike
An easy-to-moderate out-and-back along Big Chico Creek that packs in canyon views, swimming spots, and year-round greenery.
Starting from the upper park parking areas, the Yahi Trail hugs Big Chico Creek through a volcanic canyon that feels surprisingly wild so close to town. Expect a mix of mellow singletrack, rocky sections, and side paths down to the water where locals cool off in summer. It is a great first taste of Upper Park, with enough mileage options to please both casual walkers and more dedicated hikers.

Best workout with big views
Guardian Trail & North Rim, Upper Bidwell Park
Ridge Above Upper Bidwell Park • Steep Singletrack Along A Rugged Rim • Best For Strong Hikers And Trail Runners
A rocky rim route that trades shade for sweeping views over Chico, the Sacramento Valley, and the buttes.
The Guardian Trail climbs quickly from Upper Park’s north side to a narrow ridge, where the trail undulates along the rim with constant views and just enough exposure to keep things interesting. Many locals link Guardian with the North Rim and Bloody Pin trails to create longer figure-eight loops that feel more like foothill backcountry than city park. Go early or in cooler seasons, bring plenty of water, and be ready for uneven footing and sustained climbs.

Best casual in-town walk
One Mile & Lower Bidwell Park Loops
Near Downtown Chico • Flat Riverside Paths And Shady Park Loops • Best For Relaxed Strolls And Family Walks
A network of paved and dirt paths that make it easy to tailor an easygoing walk along Big Chico Creek right from the edge of downtown.
From the One Mile Recreation Area and Sycamore Pool, you can follow gentle trails and park roads under huge valley oaks, looping either side of the creek for as much or as little distance as you like. It is a favorite spot for evening walks, stroller-friendly outings, and low-key bike spins when you want movement more than mileage. Expect a social, lived-in park vibe with swimmers in summer, fall color, and plenty of people-watching.

Best wildflower escape
North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve
North Of Oroville, About 40 Minutes From Chico • Open Basalt Plateau With Seasonal Waterfalls And Wildflowers • Best Spring Wildflower Hike
A choose-your-own-adventure ramble across a rocky mesa where, in a good year, meadows explode with blooms and streams spill over dramatic rims.
The main access off Cherokee Road leads you onto a wide, open table of old lava flows, where informal paths fan out toward waterfalls like Phantom Falls and fields of lupine and poppies in spring. There is little shade and the ground can be uneven or muddy, so sturdy shoes and sun protection matter more than picking a precise route. Go when the grass is green and creeks are running, and give yourself time to wander rather than rush to one viewpoint.

Best high-country day trip
Bumpass Hell Trail, Lassen Volcanic National Park
Lassen Volcanic National Park East Of Chico • Subalpine Trail To A Steaming Hydrothermal Basin • Best For A Scenic Mountain Outing
A short but memorable alpine hike to boardwalks winding through fumaroles, boiling pools, and colorful mineral terraces.
From the trailhead on Lassen’s main park road, the Bumpass Hell Trail climbs gently through open forest and meadows before dropping to an active hydrothermal basin that feels like a pocket-sized Yellowstone. Snow lingers here, so the window for hiking is usually summer into early fall, and the elevation adds a bit of challenge if you are used to Chico’s lowlands. It is an ideal add-on to a day of scenic driving in Lassen, with plenty of pullouts and lakes to explore on the way back toward town.
