Starting from Indian Wells Canyon, this route climbs quickly out of the desert into rocky slopes dotted with pinyon and juniper. The final push to Owens Peak is steep and rugged, but on clear days you can see across the entire Indian Wells Valley and deep into the Sierra Nevada. It’s a serious outing with limited shade, best for fit hikers who start early and bring plenty of water.

Fossil Falls makes a great leg-stretcher on the drive north from China Lake Acres, with a well-marked trail over strange, polished basalt. The hike is short but engaging, inviting you to explore potholes, rock formations, and views toward the Sierra. It’s especially nice in the cooler months, when the dark rock isn’t radiating heat.

The Hagen Canyon and Red Cliffs areas have mellow loop options that let you wander under towering hoodoos and along sandy washes lined with banded rock. It’s an easy place to mix and match short hikes, making it ideal for a relaxed day trip with plenty of time for exploring and photos.
